I'm looking to purchase a new monitor. I'd love to get the best one under $200. What should i be looking for: ie. pixels, gamut, etc... Also, would it be prudent to get a refurb monitor, or should I just buy a new one that isnt as good? Thanks for your input in advance.

Best thing to do is actually go to Costco, or Best Buy or Staples and see what you like. There are so many good monitors out there right now. Don't get anything under 1680x1050. Here is one from Costco:

Take your pick!

i'd get a refurb. 200 bucks isn't much and i think the best upgrade that most people can do for their photography is to get a great monitor.

How critical are you on color accuracy?
NEC P221W is a good 22 inch at 400 dollars through Provantage. 10 bit LUT, 92% of adobeRGB...good stuff. That's actually about the cheapest respectable monitor I could find.

If you look at refurbished, delloutlet has the 2209WA occasionally on there for <$200
