So i purchased a second 580ex II unit today hoping to try out wireless eTTL. I tried to do wireless with eTTL economically with 2 flashes but it seem to be an ineffective setup. My question would be is it possible to use 2 flash units without any transmitter or receiver? I tried using the non trigger setup earlier but the 2nd flash would not fire at all. It only fire if i aim my camera and the master flash straight at it and within 5 feet. If the camera is a little further away, the 2nd flash would not fire at all even if i aim the camera straight at it. Whats the cheapes ettl transmitter and receiver out there? I apologize for the broken english because my wife is kicking me off the computer

the master/slave setup of canon flashes uses IR signals, therefore there has to be a line of sight betweent the master and the slave.

the new PW mini tt1 setup retains functionality but it's not a cheap set of triggers. you can get the cybersync which also uses radio signals and has a decent price, but then no ETTL.

Just learn how to use manual.

Another options are radiopoppers which are getting some good reviews. http://radiopopper.com/ Not cheap either, but their big selling point is eTTL compatibility for Canon, and a pretty good distance (reach) for their signal ... far more distance than I'll ever need. I'm using Elinchrom skyports but they aren't eTTL compatible.

The front of the body of the slave flash has to be pointed towards the master flash to get the optimal distance between the slave and the master. And there should be no obstruction between the slave and the master.

Yes I had the front body of the slave pointed toward my camera but it would not fire if I was just a few meter away. Im hoping its because of a device malfunction but it look like i need to buy some radio popper or pocket wizard. I hate setting everything up manually

That isn't right. There's something definitely amiss with one of your flashes. You should be able to fire the slave even at a distance of 20 feet or more between the master and slave.
