Not quite high school football (give them 6-7 years) but more football posting on POTN nonetheless.

I had enough of the girls tennis this afternoon by the time the junior varsity was starting their matches so I headed across the parking lot to a friend's (coaching his kid) 3rd/4th grade game to get some pictures. Again, I think the football should be a little smaller for their age.

A 'Pick 6' at this age is amazing.. they rarely pass on either side at this age and to catch an interception AND run it back...

This poor kid scored the game tying touchdown on THE last play of the game.

This is the piling on part, but notice the ball IS over the line.

Good on the little feller. I can't believe they pack on all those pads even at that age. It's got to overkill for those little kids, surely they can't throw that much power into each other to need those huge whopping pads!

Awesome shots! Sammy's Pizza and bikes on the sideline says it all! Good stuff and hope they all came away in one piece.

Football at this age is awsome! The reason for the pads is simply to protect them and for the kids to get used to wearing the gear. Yeah they can't "throw that much power into each other," but then again, the kids are not that big and their bones aren't that strong yet either. It's all relative to their size. One of those kids hitting you means nothing, but one of those kids hitting another kid simularly sized or smaller means a lot to the kid getting hit. Also, that ball is as small as they come. Beyond that, they only make goofy sovenier balls. They'll grow into the gear.

As for the pictures, I love them. Maybe a bit over exposed (could be my monitor), but I love the last series of shots.

My 11 year old is playing football for the first time this year and now you are talking some big kids who hit like crazy! The nose tackle/center on his team is 185 lbs. But you know what, the piling on still happens, and now it really hurts!

Nice pics!

Action is there...but your abilities need a bit more experience. ISO1600 is WAAAYYYY too high...especially if there is still decent light out. Bring that baby down to a respectable 400 at most. You can check your exposure with the histogram...and it should arc somewhere towards the middle for better read on exposure. Other than that, you're golden!

The way the sun was coming and going ... it was too dark sometimes.. the last 3 were after 7 pm with little sun but some streaks at times if a cloud moved on. They have to play these games fast from 6 until 7 before they run out of light and it gave little chance to adjust for the light coming and going. If I get another chance to shoot these games I'll probably stick to the 50-135F2.8 instead and just crop until I can get the longer F2.8.

Are you on the field when shooting these?

The 3rd/4th graders play on a 60 yard field with 30 being the "50" obviously.. and maybe 40 yards wide.. parents line the far sideline and you can be right up close but I'd never be on the actual field of play.. always out of bounds ;)

Even at this age, the kids could take out someone's knee if you're not paying attention while looking through the viewfinder! Being a "small" town of 10k people and knowing the youth coaches well helps, and I probably could have stood right in the endzone to get shots without anyone saying anything about it.

They seem overexposed and the WB is off. I would suggest you shoot manual (with custm WB) to make sure you get the IQ you need. Good framing and decent backgrounds.
