I just got into shooting with a DSLR last month. My budget is extremely tight for camera related stuff. I picked up a 10D with a grip off eBay (guy turned out to be a POTN member). My budget allowed about $100 for a lens and I had a hard time deciding between a Sigma 24-70mm f/3.5-5.6 or a 50mm f/1.8 II. I went with the nifty fifty and am very glad I did.

Now for the good news part. We had some friends over last night to watch my daughters' soccer games. I had my camera and was doing my best with the 50mm to get some decent shots. My buddy asks if a 35mm Rebel lens would fit my camera. I said it should as long as it's an EF mount. He said he wasn't sure what all he had, but I could have the camera and two lenses if I wanted them.

He calls last night and says the one is the "kit" 35-80mm lens and the other is a 75-300mm. I know the current version of these lenses aren't spectacular, but was wondering if the 10yr old versions are any better. He said he bought this stuff ~1999.

He said the caps are on them both and they've been in a bag for several years on a shelf in the basement. Either way, they're functioning (I hope) lenses that I'm getting for FREE!!!

I may not have a good selection of "Great Glass", but I should have all the focal lengths I'll ever need covered. I will be getting a modded EF-S 18-55mm lens in the mail today, so I'll have 18-55mm, 50mm, 35-80mm, and 75-300mm. So now I can see what length I like and work toward getting a prime or a better "zoom" lens someday.

Just thought I'd share my happiness. It doesn't take much for a n00b to get happy, especially when someone hands you 2 free lenses and you only have 1.

If the lenses were on a rebel...they will fit your 10D....The big issue from them sitting in a basement for that long is the very real possibility of them having some mildew growing on the elements of the lenses. As long as they turn up clean...they should be fine...and at least give you something to experiment with. Congrats on having a friend make you a generous offer like that.

I'm very happy with my friend. :D

He dropped off the gear a little while ago.

1 Canon bag - fits all my stuff
1 Canon Rebel X S 35mm camera
1 Manual
3 working batteries
2 rolls of B&W film
1 Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II - metal mount
1 Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III - Drive motor squeaks a bit once in a while
1 Tiffen 58mm UV Protector
1 Canon 52mm UV Haze
1 Kodak 52mm Circular Polarizer
1 ROLEV M.G. 52mm Star

I have no idea when/if I should use the UV Haze or the Circular Polarizer.
I tried the Star...that's kinda cool.

If anyone is interested in the Camera body, batteries and film, let me know.

Experiment....the UV haze is nice to keep the sand off your lens at the beach.
