Hi! I am new here. Just joined here yesterday after picking up the Canon SX20. I was on the fence about it but a friend sent me a link to this sight and I saw all the nice pics here so decided I this is camera I would get. It will be a challenge for me to learn how to use this camera! It has a lot more then my great little Fuji 8000 that I love too.

I mostly photograph birds, wildlife/nature, scenic shots and my grandkids. Photographing birds is a daily activity for me.

Is there anyway to load a photo here directly from my computer?

Jon

You can attach images that are less than 1024 pixels in the longest dimension and under 150 KB (see the Image Posting FAQ and Rules linked in my sig. for more details). Or, if you have a photo hosting site you can link to your photos that are stored there (same dimensional restrictions of 1024 pixels max., but file size is wide open).

The Moon . 80x optical zoom.
Um . . . The SX20 doesn't have 80X optical zoom; it has 20x optical zoom, where things are actually magnified by the lens, and 4x crop and resize, AKA "digital zoom".

Vidcanon: You've had much better success than I in capturing a full-zoom moon. I've already learned that next time I try that from a tripod, I need to turn off IS. Could you tell me what other settings you used to take that shot? I like it.

I guess I could just save yours and be done with it, but the moon over Florida is TOTALLY different from the Canadian one... ;)

Hi Standsure . Thanks , I'm glad you liked it. A tripod is a must for this shot. Use the timer , 10 secs preferably .
Settings were F/8 , 1/100 sec. , iso 80 , full zoom.

Funny cookie? Ha ha I'll have to tell my nephew that one since its a picture of his Chilean rose tarantula! I think I'll actually take that picture again from a more flatering angle. The birds were mine btw.

As for the length of time I had to wait that was because I ordered from a company called 'crazy cameras' and I was led to believe from their website that the are a British company shipping from the uk but this is not the case. They are actually an American company and the camera came all the way from America. Obviously I wont be using them again!!!!

The rechargeable Sanyo "Eneloop" batteries are highly recommended by many folks. I've been using them happily so far. They last pretty long and hold a charge very well when not being used. They also have the advantage of being recyclable and environmentally friendly. They don't cost a whole lot either! Just my $.02 :D

A tarantula? Er...yeah, I knew that! But seriously, I like that angle. There's no mistaking what it is, but not seeing where the head is makes it a bit more abstract. I like it.

i believe that this cam's indoor photo are mostly at the better quality range comparing ti many rivals but its hard to deny that the outdoor ones are too nice...the most important point about this cam is how to use it...when you find the way to deal with it,it rocks.

Adam_S

for the city shot my settings were
Iso 100
aperture 4.0
10 sec shutter speed
tripod for this one

as for the lake shot
iso 80
aperture 5.0
1/125 shutter speed
handheld for this shot

i havent taken to many indoor shots as when i would have some time to try to get a shot i havent been able to set up proper lighting but i will post a couple of the ones i have when i dig through my unsorted ones on the computer. so far i am plenty pleased with the pictures i have been able to get and would recommend this camera to anyone who is interested in it

It's great to see the younger generation into photography!
Just another form of art that takes lotsa patients and practice.
The SX20 is a fun camera to play with...try the Black and White setting and some of the other creative settings.
Study other peoples photos and techniques you'll learn a LOT!
Maybe even more than you would from a book?

Take a look at my photos in my sig below.

Hi Emily

Hope you're having fun with the SX20 like I am too :)

Just a few comments:

Pic 1: Perhaps the acorn should be the subject in focus rather than the twig (???) in the middle of the pic. The horizon also slants to the left and makes me feel like I'm sliding off. The slanted horizon can be corrected using post-processing.

Pic 2: You could do this shot in B&W and it'd look awesome. I would've disabled the super-macro and let the texture of the tree bark show all the way up to the branches.

Pic 3: Doing a sepia might be appropriate for this pic. As the angel is your subject, you might have used the flash to fill-in the shadows in the wings (some detail was lost there). The little blue-red splotch at the bottom edge is also a little distracting in an otherwise neutral-coloured shot.

Your meter was thrown off by the bright clouds in the background; when you have a backlit subject like that you sometimes need to use some Exposure Compensation.

I love the coyote pic but you should try adding sharpen to it those eyes will be really sharp.

Thank you for the advice. I'm not good with Elements (just got it). I tried the sharpen option and it did bring the eyes out but it also made the grass look funny :) Is there a way to only sharpen the eyes without applying it to the whole picture?

Ive been reading and reading here.. and I can not wait to get out and take some photos. Its been raining and I do not want to ruin my new camera.

I'm with you! It hasn't stopped raining here in Texas either....I think I'll follow Jon's advice!

I keep some OpTech RainSleeves in my bag against those sudden cloudbursts. They're about $6 for a two-pack. You can even get them from the POTN Store (link at top of page).

The first is using the selective color feature and tweaked it very little afterwards to bring out the color.

Flowers were about half a block from me and it was raining so the quality isn't the best but im loving this camera. Thought about returning it for a dslr but after looking at the pics here and playing around with it more, i am glad i didn't

John I think I will look in to those bags. If I were to use a normal plastic bag is it better to use like a grocery type or ziploc..

Joseaalvarez I love! love! that cloud shot

I carry a couple of big plastic Ziploc bags in my vest....they are the best cheap option for rain protection. They are heavy enough to hold up well....light enough to be very foldable.

Thanks joseaalvarez, so happy you liked it!! I basically followed the suggestions by Vidcanon on pg 12. Like he said, a tripod is a must. I used the P setting and set the iso to 80, I let the camera choose aperture (f5.7) and shutter speed (1/100). Used full zoom (80x digital) and the 10 sec timer. Post processed using IrfanView: cropped, sharpen and added contrast. Good Luck!

Hello Friends,

As this is my first post at P.O.T.N. and i am amazed to see the thread about sx20is as i have purchased the camera 3 months ago but haven't got the chance to explore the out-door photography.
But as i have seen its capability so i have taken these shots from the balcony and without the tripod and i want to share this

Hi all! New to the board and just purchased my SX20 a few weeks ago. I am returning to photography after several years. Prior was using 35mm with Canon EOS Elan IIE. I am really liking this camera. I travel quite extensively around the world on business and wanted something with good resolution, great zoom and must be compact. The SX20 fits the bill perfectly. Here is a photo I have taken in the last week from a trip to California with ocean and a good B&W of my grandson. I have been experimenting with several post processing pacages like PS Lightroom 2, Serfit, Photomatix etc. I settled on Corel Paintshop PhotoPro X3 and it should arrive in a few days. Hope you enjoy the shots. Everything I have seen from this board is awesome. I'll be traveling ot Mexico in a few weeks and hope to get some good shots in the Puerto Vallarta area.

Unfortunately this is my best so far. I'm impressed with the camera's capabilities. 1/30th of a second doesn't work real well when you're shivering and propped against a car with the engine running but I thought it turned out better than I expected. There are a few edits for size and to brighten the sky somewhat.

I've developed a liking for night time photography, especially long exposure takes. Unfortunately, can only do 15 sec shutter delays at the moment, but hopefully CHDK should solve that. Anyway, here are a few good one's I've managed.

The image just needs a slight adjustment in post processing. It cleans up fine.

Woolbur/Stargazer,

None of the pictures that have been post are processed (except for resizing), they are all strictly SOOC. Frankly, I don't know enough about PP to attempt it (frankly find it intimidating). Can any one of you perhaps do some tweaking to it to illustrate what kind of PP would work in this case? The first photo (of the Marina) was taken at a shutter delay of 5 sec, not 15, and I don't have another picture that is of a different setting (maybe one at a lower ISO but that didn't turn out too well).

By the way....that is a very cool location for a photo....I would continue to take shots from there....and just experiment with your settings. The EXIF data shows that shot was 5 seconds at f/3.5 @ ISO 200. Try 5 seconds at f/5.6 @ ISO 100

Dan, impressive...!

Makes the picture look remarkably better. May I ask what you did (adjust contrast/brightness?) and where (photoshop? Picasa?). Also, what do you mean by "brought the levels down 2 full stops". Apologies if I sound like a newbie..I am :)

P.S. this location is the Dubai Marina - wonderfully scenic place for photography. I did take an ISO 100 shot as well, just don't have it with me at the moment, will post it later.

I used Adobe Lightroom 2.6 to do the edit. I also played with it in Photoshop Elements 7. Essentially what I did in the edit was to electronically change your aperture from f/3.5 to f/7.1, reducing the amount of overall light.

faizanrashid
9th of March 2010 (Tue), 00:29
Dan, thanks for the tips. Never worked on Lightroom. Will try to see if I can get my hands on it and perhaps try a few things myself. Was not aware that it was possible to reduce aperture electronically! PP is a whole different arena I guess. The SX20 only allow aperture to be reduced up to 5.6, so tweaks such as this are very handy.

Woolburr
9th of March 2010 (Tue), 00:36
It should have allowed you to set the aperture to f/8....in manual mode or Av.

faizanrashid
9th of March 2010 (Tue), 00:57
Yes, I doubled checked. It does allow me to go up to f/8. I guess I never chose that option while actually photographing because I felt it looked underexposed in the viewfinder at the time.

Woolburr
9th of March 2010 (Tue), 01:38
Night shots are very hard to tell in the viewfinder. Experimenting is the best bet...try different settings....keep notes. If you find one that really works...start with that for your basic shot....then try over-exposing slightly as well as under-exposing slightly.

faizanrashid
9th of March 2010 (Tue), 01:53
