Thanks Yoli, I know it's not that good but I was pleased with it.

One thing I just realised is, I should have turned IS off as I was using a tripod, so I wonder if it would have made much difference?

Moon shots are a lot of fun. When family and friends look at it they are usually in disbelief at how clear and close it looks! Good work FxFocus.

Yes, I know my wife was impressed but then she brought me back down to earth by asking if I could nip out and take a similar pic of saturn as it is her favourite planet..! :D

I didn't do that either, although I know it's recommended by reading other threads. I might try again and see if it does make a difference....

Ok, some more form the weekend that sadly just ended. These were taken this morning near a new Golfing club called Badia. The first pic is also my first attempt at HDR (its not as vivid and painterly as some of the stuff you see, but still, I used a freeware, not a high end image processing tool). As always, C&C welcome.

Another couple. What made me really glad about these pictures was that they cemented my decision regarding the SX20. I had been a bit dual minded about the camera once I saw some of the excellent stuff that the S90 is capable of (on other threads here) but I know nothing can beat the excellent zoom capabilities. Very little PP has been done on these, except for adjusting contrast (increased), brightness (lowered, it was a very sunny day) and sharpness (fixed in the first).

Which settings for the middle one? I just cannot figure out how to blur the background like that.

Nothing special, all the details about the image are right there:

Aperture: F 5.7
Shutter: 1/640
ISO 80
100 mm (Full zoom + some digital zoom as well).

I guess it comes down to using full zoom. I was a fair distance away from the birds (must have been around 5 metres or so) and they were sufficiently far from the trees that are visible in the background. This gave the image a lot of DoF. Had to use a tripod to get steady shot.

It's amazing what good software can do. I posted an image here earlier which was my first HDR (using a freeware) but someone I know recommended I try Photomatix and I did and viola...the results are 180 Degree improvement on what you can achieve with simple tone mapping....I'm attaching both pics here, the original image (normal exposure, there were three in total used for the HDR) and the eventual HDR. I find the results....pleasant :D

My brief experience with HDR (I'm really no good at it really...) and Photomatix has lead me to believe that you can have a lot of variation in the same shot depending on how you play with or tweak the settings available to you. In the end, I settled for what looked most appealing to the eye without compromising too much on the realism of the shot.

I can't afford strobes yet so I have to get creative with industrial lights. I recently bought a twin 1000 W light stand with adjustable output. I diffused it with two sheets and shot this beautiful woman that way. I had many pics that I totally loved but I agreed to only show this one. I cannot remember if I used the S5 or the SX20...I had both set up for different exposures on two different tripods.

That is yet another good shot - the first Glamour pic shot from the SX20 that I have seen

Anyway, if you look at the EXIF data on your original image it should help discern what camera was used for this photo...also if you could post it here for all of your pics so far, it would benefit those of us who like to constantly learn.

I edited the first post to include the data. I will have to find the other original to find the EXIF. Honestly, I just get lucky sometimes and other times I edit. Not much to learn from me..I am here to learn. I was a photo editor for a few other people for years and decided to pick up the camera myself instead.
While I was setting up the flowers and a reflector, this guy jumped onto my coffee. Tried to Super Macro . It was cool enough outside that he didn't move. The antennae was touch the lens..lol.

Hi all, I got an SX20 recently as my attempt to get into photography. I spent a weekend with a friends SLR and really enjoyed it so I decided I wanted to try myself. I wasn't ready to take the SLR plunge so I went with the SX20 so I could still adjust manual settings and hopefully learn to photograph the right way. To this point I've probably taken less then 100 pictures in my life. I'm 29 so that's kinda sad I'm sure to you long time photographers. I know my pics aren't great so far but I thought I'd post them up and then some where down the road it would be fun to look back and see how I've progressed and this seemed like the right thread to do it in. So here is a few I've taken, just trying to familiarize myself with the camera, learn what things like aperture, shutter speed, and working with my circular polarizing filter can do. Although now that I've mentioned it I don't think I was using the filter for any of these pics. lol

I was trying to get a decent picture of my halos with this one.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t11/IMADreamerscobalt/toy%20collection/IMG_0193.jpg

I think I demonstrated the importance of location with this photo. Unfortunately during severe weather I have to stay in the office and take calls so my night time storm shots were ruined by the pole light out the window. Also the reflection on the window (they don't open) of the light coming through the cracks of the door in the back of the room. Hopefully the next time we get a good night time storm I'm not at work and can find a nice location to get good pictures. I still loved how the lightning lit the lake up in the picture.

be gentle please.

Fantastic pictures everyone!! I've loved looking through this thread. Here are a couple more of mine. I've had this camera about 2 months now and I'm really loving it. At first when I got it, I was a bit disappointed at the amount of post work that had to be done for posting pictures on the internet, but as I've learned the camera more, I've gotten better results. I've also found that untouched pictures look much different as prints...they look incredible as prints! So I'm very happy with this camera so far :D

Wow, amazing thread. Very intimidating for newbies like me. I have recently started learning about cameras. Believe it or not i never even heard terms like shutter speed and aperture until 3 days ago. Got familiar with these stuffs after buying the sx20is and reading the complete manual. Have taken about 300 photos so far. Most of them as usual are out of focus!! Have been shooting in manual mode only. Have had enough of auto mode in my life. Anyway still got a few decent one from those odd 300 lots i have shot so far. here r a few of them....dont laugh :( but please do criticize them. i am here to learn :) oh and btw, these are NOT untouched, some pp is involved in some of them (increasing saturation in a couple of them), and resized them in imageshack.

Hi everyone! I just got my SX20 yesterday (4/29) and am fidgeting with it. All of the photos on here and other parts of the net look phenomenal, but mine only look so-so. I'm 99% sure I have the settings all out of whack. I keep hearing that having f2.8 will make your backgrounds blurry while the object in front is crisp. But so far my backgrounds don't look that blurry. Grarrr! Looks like I'll be very addicted to this page. All of your photos look great, everyone! :)

The butterfly picture was shot in Program mode with an aperture of 5.0. Shutter speed was 1/50 and the ISO was 80.

The tulip was done in Program mode with Super Macro. The aperture was 2.8, shutter speed was 1/20 and ISO was 80.

The second to the last picture was done after I got my Raynox DCR 250 Macro converter lens. Shooting Mode was Aperture Priority. Aperture Value was 4.5 and Shutter Speed was 1/124. ISO was 80. The Raynox lens is very cool for taking macros but takes some getting used to, but very worth the $$.

Just browsing this thread, wow some cracking images on here!
I was reall thinking of getting one of these bad boys but have a question, ok two.
1 - Is it much better than the SX10? I can get one s/h at a fair price, but can afford the SX20 if it's worth it.
2 - Does it AF during video capture? My SX110 doesn't very well.
I love that monster zoom too!
I love my gear, but when I'm on a daytrip with the kids a 1DMKIV is a major overkill.

Thanks

Great shots! I'm now seriously considering one of those SX20!

I see that it does work great outdoors, and one of you guys took some indoors pics in a dark setting without the flash and it did come out nicely too!

The zooming quality and macro capacity are awesome.

I have to take a lot of indoors, no flash allowed, pics (most museums and churches are that way). If I could tweek my old S1 to do a good job, I'd probably be able to do as good with the SX20, I guess...

Now, big question: is that camera "noisy", I mean can it be used discreetly  where it shouldn't be used, without attracting undesirable attention (the kind that wants you to erase your photos ;) )?

Zoomed in on a tree about 75 feet away using auto mode and no tripod:

Took these on Thursday while out at the local ponds since it was actually a good day here in Dundee for a change.

New guy signing in. :)

Picked up the SX20IS as a possible replacement for my Sony A200 DSLR. So far I'm really digging this camera. I wanted something with a good zoom, and took great pictures, as well as using SD cards so I could plug it straight into my MacBook Pro or iPad. Looks like the Sony will be going on Ebay. :D

Anyways, here's a couple shots from messing around in the backyard today.

That last image is a piece of graffiti on the bridge in the first image.

Did you use a polarizer filter on the bridge shot? The sky is beautiful. I am about to take a class and the instructor requests that we have one and I was told this camera does not have a threaded lens, thus cannot take a filter. Is this true???

@ Kedleson

SX20 lens barrel has grooves not threads. But you can use one of those custom 58mm Filter adapters and fix a 58mm Circular Polarizing Filter (http://www.canonsx20.net/sx20-accessories/58mm-circular-polarizing-filter.php). Check the Lensmate 58mm Adapter (http://www.canonsx20.net/sx20-accessories/lensmate-58mm-filter-adapter.php) and Janco 58mm Adapter (http://www.canonsx20.net/sx20-accessories/janco-58mm-filter-adapter.php).

Lensmate filter is plastic and Janco filter is metal.

Hi everybody, I'm a novice, relatively, and I only discovered this forum recently. I just bought a SX20-IS and so far I've been alternately frustrated and pleasantly surprised, but at any rate it's the best camera I've ever had.

I'm working on a series of "product photo" type pictures right now, and have spent a few hours this week trying to get this new camera to show me what it can do at macro and super macro settings. I posted this in another thread, and they were all taken with the SX20-IS.

and here is one more.

Any advice or criticism is welcome.

Try using a 'product box' to light it for more detail and less shadowing.

Has anyone perfected bokeh while not being in Macro? I love to take "people pictures" and I cannot for the life of me get the background to go into a blur when taking shots of friends. It works a little bit when I'm 20+ feet away from the person, but then zooming in ups my aperture to 5.0 or more. Getting the SX20 book in today from Amazon, so I figured I'd study up on that this week. I'm starting to fall in love with the Rebel XS and don't want to lose hope on my SX20!
