2) The zoom was in full stretch (subject was about 2,000 meters away)

I had no idea Canon released the SX20 IS camera before 06/09/2009 as the date stamp indicates on your photos above.

Where I am (Hong Kong) we put the day before the month when setting the date. So that reads 06 Sept 2009. I forgot this is an international forum.

Nice shots - but do you actually mean 2 kilometers away? (2000 meters?) That is quite a stretch...

2000 meters ? wow thats an very clean shot with 560 Tele photo. Now why I haven't able to do that with SX10 ?

That's 1.2 miles away, I don't buy it. Maybe 200 meters, a typo?

> My SX10 - using the 1.4x Teleconverter - will define car number-plates at just over 1km - 1,000 metres - about 3,300ft. The pix are noisy - on a clear day - but reducing the 3648 x 2736 to 1600 x 1200 lowers the visible noise / blur enough to make the plates readable. Was actually an experiment after a bet with a friend - over a known distance.

The technique whereby this camera takes crisp, clear, pix of anything, in great close-up detail, at 1km, let alone 2km - is highly interesting - I'd much like to learn it... I'll happily settle for 1km - it'll save me the cost of a DSLR and a pricey long lens...

The SX10 IS is pretty nifty on the Zoom - particularly on a steady Tripod - and the 1.4x Tele is "just" usable - for bets - or if you really can't get closer....

> As a beginner - under-a-year-newbie - I'm more than willing to learn the "crisp, clear, close-ups at over 1km", method, though - it'd extend my camera's uses greatly....

Regards, Dave.

I think I just got lucky with this shot. Anyway I was on the roof of a friend's apartment building and the subject was on the roof of another lower building just visible in the distance with the naked eye. I had a tripod, very bright cloudless sky, plus the subject didn't move at all during the 30 minutes I was attempting the take this shot. It took several attempts before I got this.

Could you post few photos which taken with this 1.4x Teleconvertor ?

What type of convertor is it ? something like Canon EF 1.4X II Extender ?

How did you fix it to the lens ? Also I thought these might put too much weight on lens.

SX10IS has a digital tele converter setting for 1.4X & 2.3X. Perhaps you like to check this on your SX20 (and I think i should also . have).

Haven't use this feature, but I'm guessing it's just a low dose of digital zoom.

The digital zoom. I only used it when I really need the shot for the sake of documenting something. The resolution, grains and sharpness are horrible.

Hesitha - No, you don't add anything physical to the SX10. It has a built-in 1.4x and 2.3x Teleconverter - quite different from the separate Digital Zoom, which is hardly usable.

Look on Pages 68 and 69 of the SX10 IS Manual. It shows the "Safety Zoom" ranges. The 1.4x level approximates 28x zoom. Rest or Tripod needed. The camera's processor combines the optical and digital functions, making it a lot better than "digital zoom" itself, though obviously not as good as optical alone.

You can - with a rest or tripod (use the Timer to avoid tripod vibes after focusing and pressing the shutter button) - get "reasonable" results - that you can "improve" (hide a lot of sins, that is!) - by reducing the images to 1280 x 1024 or smaller. However, the images won't stand much cropping...

Seems to be a reasonably usable "If you can't get the shot any other way" utility Canon has thoughtfully provided. However, the 2.3x version of that Teleconverter is a bit "experimental"....

I don't know if the SX20 IS has the TC-utility - I assume that it would.

Edit: - I D/L'd the SX20 Manual and checked for TC. It's on Page 63, but it is different from the SX10 - instead of 1.4x and 2.3x, it has 1.5x and 2.0x, and there is no "Safety Zoom" table, as in the SX10.

> This "might" have to do with the SX20 having 20% more Mpix on the same sized sensor as the SX10 - perhaps somebody more advanced could explain that for us...?

Regards, Dave.

This was taken with SX20IS and 1.5x TC....handheld
You can't tell a whole lot from the downsized image...but the full size shot isn't too bad.

This link will take you to a slideshow of 4 images (http://Frogdawg.zenfolio.com/p265154008/slideshow)....5mm, 100mm, 100mm w/1.5x TC, 100mm w/2x TC images are straight from the camera with no edits at all. Distance from camera to subject car is about 100 yards. I have to say that based on my own test that the image claims in post #2 are total BS. EXIF data is available and displayed for all four shots.

Check the image dimensions and file size. If an attachment didn't go up, it might have exceeded 1024 pixels in one dimension or been more than 150 KB. In either case, you would have been given a message about the reason when you tried to upload it. See the FAQ linked in my signature for more . . .

We will try again to get the peachy keen thing up. Hand held macro, 3 cfl lights directly overhead, (one cool white, two warm white), WB flour, 1/25, f4, 76mm equiv. Cloned out distraction from edge of transparent cutting board in ancient photo editor: Micrografx Picture Publisher. It may be clunky but at least I am able to navigate the interface. Thanks for the tutorial. I must have missed the "upload" button before.

This is a picture I took in Cape Cod over the weekend. I didn't realize it when I took the shot but I still had the Camera set to f/5.6 in Av. I wish I had changed that before I snapped the shot so I could have gotten the star fish in better focus with the background. I am still getting a feel for the camera but so far I like it.

If the photos were saved with EXIF data intact, EXIF Viewer or FXIF are browser add-ins that will let you see it. FXIF is for FireFox/Mozilla based browsers only, IIRC; EXIF Viewer works in Internet Explorer as well. Most photo editing/viewing programs will let you view the EXIF data of photos you've opened in them.

The Medical Examiner's Office, where I work in the Drug Lab, takes up a small city block...except for the 4 rowhouse residents who held at bay the State's bid to buy their ramshackle rowhouses to make more room for our Forensic Labs.

I'm glad they held out. The rowhouses are old, almost but not quite derelict which is the same thing that can be said for the residents. One of our neighbors always takes the opportunity when our vans pull up with mangled bodies to be autopsied, to take his two ferrets for a walk whereupon he "accidentally" lets one or both of them loose near our gaping open back door so he and the ferrets can get a good look inside.

I've never seen any of the other residents in person.

One of the rowhouses had apparently been a storefront in the boom days of the turn of the century leather tannery buildings. For at least a decade, there was boxes of candy in the window, as if for sale, yet no one ever was seen going in or out. Naturally we had our suspicions about the true nature of commerce that was taking place there.

This all changed about a year ago, when the dusty boxes of candy were removed and replaced by floor to ceiling white damask drapes that were yellowed with age and nearly rotted through in places. The large storefront windows remained empty for a while and then the "stage" was filled with 3 different items, none of which made sense, none of which accompanied any signage announcing a commercial enterprise.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t7/threedogwrite/Window2WEB.jpg

It was a whirlwind of faux fur, imitation leather and snakeskin, feathers, and gold and silver and wrought iron accouterments.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t7/threedogwrite/Window1WEB.jpg

None of the residents have put up any Christmas decorations and never have for the 25 years I've worked at the Forensic Lab. However, I couldn't help but notice a heartfelt note posted on one of the doors by a Mother to her chldren.....

1) At the park in 34 degrees C

2) The zoom was in full stretch (subject was about 2,000 meters away)

The girl was over a mile away ? (2000 meters = over 1 mile.) And it looks like your looking down ???? A mile is a long way away ??

Question. Why cant the so called professionals who are reviewing the sx20is not take pictures of the quality on this thread? Are deliberately taking bad pictures in the hope that you'll go out and buy a dslr or something or are they just hopeless photographers? After seeing the quality of the pictures in this thread I ordered a sx20is on Wednesday. I am expecting it possibly on Wednesday or Thursday.

Couple of obvious (to me anyhow) reasons -
They're trying to show what "Joe Average" can expect; people here are pushing the camera as far as they can
They're probably reviewing several cameras a month, from different manufacturers, and can't learn the nuances of a given vendor's feature set

One stipulation comes with that Camera when you get it.....
You gotta hang out here and share your pics!! http://diecastcrazy.com/community/mysmiliesvb/mysmilie_172.gif

I often wondered the same thing when I saw all the diff reviews of this camera! (About 6 at least)
I think many cameras get under rated cuz of bias (just my opinion)

I've been down the DSLR money pit.
I THINK I can take just as good or better pics with my lil SX20 and not lug a buncha Camera around to do it.

BTW:
I got tied up with Christmas and New Years and forgot to post this I got the other Morning.

To add to that, most of the reviewers are trying to use some sort of standard to rate cameras, and thus use minimal processing after the fact. The people here use post processing to wring every bit of quality out of the images.

I agree 100%, I actually traded in my DSLR and lenses etc. for my SX20IS, a couple other point and shoots accessories etc. I got tired of always seeming to have on the wrong lens at the wrong time, and lugging around all the heavy stuff. The golf shots in my earlier post, only have a crop and auto contrast or auto color done on them. If you look at the sand tosses and the ball, I think its every bit as good as my dslr would have given me. I will admit however that your timing has to be pretty good for action stuff as your fps is basically zilch. But if you practice it can obviously be done with quite satisfactory results...Brad

If you mean is there a setting in the camera that you can change to shoot 300 dpi, no. You shoot at, I believe, 180 dpi and then up it to 300 dpi or more in post processing.

Jon

All the "ppi" setting is is an EXIF data field; most applications don't use it, but if you have one that does, it's easily changed in post-processing.

Emily, congrats on your new camera. You seem to have a keen eye and a lot of passion for photography. Good luck with your dream. As a side note, I would recommend removing your age etc from your signature. If you dont publicize it no one would know. Your age has nothing to do with being new to photography, place emphasis on your newness to photography, not your age. This is a great site with alot of really good people. As far as tips, read alot here and elsewhere, and practice alot while taking notes of what you do , so that you can duplicate it later if you like the results....Brad

Let me warn you that what you are about to see may horrify you...:) I graduated from a pink Sony Cybershot DSC-W120 that I carry everywhere to an SX20is that I got for Christmas. I have been dying for a camera that had some zoom power but wasn't ready for a DSLR (like my mom's XT that she doesn't know how to use). Where I live, a moose, bear, bald eagle (you get the point) can pop out of nowhere and you have to be camera ready (with a zoom). I have NO IDEA what I'm doing with this camera. The shots I've taken so far I can't even say are any better than my Cybershot except for the zoom. I am discouraged that they aren't AMAZING like the photos I've seen here, but I'm inspired about the possibilities. I've ordered several books on photography and hope to read about my camera on this forum. I thought I was doing pretty good til I started reading about completely foreign stuff (aperture, ISO, F...) You may as well be speaking Latin. Anyways, you know the pics the reviewers posted from the "Average Joe" and ya'll wondered how they could be so bad? Here's proof. Photo taken of Gray Partidges in my backyard.

? Why are you shouting? You don't have to use save for the web and you certainly don't have to restrict yourself to only 600 pixels. The forum allows 1024. The image posting rules are 1024 pixels at widest dimension and the 150K limit only applies to images that you attach to the thread. If you host on another site and embed your images or link them, there is no limit at all on the file size.

Welcome to the forum....are you using a PC or a Mac?

Hey guys. I'm a mess all around. I don't have photo editing software. I'm totally green. My PC uses Windows Live photo gallery. When I tried to attach the photo to my post it said it was too big. I couldn't figure out how to resize it so I added it to an old account I had on Photobucket. I remember it used to ask what size you wanted (small, med, lg, thumbnail) now it asks you to fill in the blank with a size which totally confused me. So I just tried to embed the URL (hope that's right) with "full-size photograph" and this is what I got

I feel totally hopeless amongst a crowd of Rock Stars...

Thanks for the welcome!

It is a free tool and works great for sizing your images for web display. Run the installer...the tool will show in the right click menu when done. It will give several choices of sizes to pick...most will be under the 150K cap for attachments.

I just bought this camera and couldnt wait to try it out on the Moon. I love astronomy and photography and I love this zoom. I just wish the image quality was a bit stronger. I have learned through this forum, that post processing is the key to better image quality. I am currently using "PhotoFiltre" for my image processing and Im wondering if I bought Adobe Photosop Elements 8 , would I get better results , or could I do more with my images ? Any help you more experienced shooters out there can give me would be most appreciated.

Image data : ISO :80 , F 5.7 @ 1/125 sec with optical and digital maxed out. Handheld shooting from my bedroom (way too cold out ) with my window pulled down from the top. No screen in the way. Not too bad for handheld huh ? The only post processing done to this image as you see it here is the resizing to fit the guidelines of this forum.

They are Gray Partridges. You can't tell in the picture but they are really big (some can be over 1 pound). They are native to Eurasia but can be found along states bordering Canada. I'm lucky that they visit my backyard 3-4 times a day to eat bird seed I leave out for the smaller birds. They travel in groups of 10-15. I could watch them all day :D

From a total beginner's POV, I like the second only because I have always thought of the moon as gray as opposed to the almost sepia look in the first picture. Again, I haven't even strayed away from Auto Mode let alone any photo editing so it's just pure aesthetics. Love your bird picture!

I am still very new but of all my photos these are the best, I used a little manual focus and some b/w and vivid in a couple pictures. This is at a local lake by the name of Antietam in Pennsylvania.

Nature may have done the beautiful work for me, but standing on little icy rocks in 16 degree weather over a deep creek to get clear shots was the tricky part.
