Pekka suggested I "join" this forum with a note on my setup....see the G1 Forum for why I left the G1!
Oh, by the way, the speed (ISO 50 on the G1 is similar to 200 or even 400 on the D30!) and the smoothness of the pictures had a little bit to do with it.
Lenses:
I studied every Forum and newsgroup, and the resolution charts, and the customer responses, and then talked to my friend Howard, who said, "Well, there are lots of good lenses, but if you want them to *feel* like your Leica, you'll only get "L" glass....". It is true of the Leica - you can spot a Leica picture even in a bunch of 8x10's, and much more so for larger prints....it is both resolution and some semi-intangible factor that makes the picture "pop".
so, I sold my Leica and went for the 17-35L 2.8, 28-70L 2.8. and 70-200 4.0, all at once. The pocketbook will be thin for a while! I went for the 4.0 in the long one because, with the multiplier, the 28-70 is a 46-110, and will be the portrait lens. Therefore the big one didn't need a shallow DOF, and the 4.0 is half the weight and price - so I don't mind carrying it around all the time. I don't use filters (hate the flare and reflections they bring), so the odd size wasn't a problem./
And, of course, I'm loving the D30 - it makes switching from a Leica not such a hardship!

A bit more - of course, it is really about the pictures, not about the camera. But having the right camera does make it easier/more fun to take the pictures (it just felt different with a Leica than with other cameras - the great viewfinder, the ease and simplicity of use, the crisp and rich pictures). And I don't have a darkroom any more, so a "light room" makes sense. And so does the D30....

You made very good lens choices!
28-70L 2.8 is on my list, too (and getting rid of 28-135IS I'm sure). It's a pity they don't make 1.8 or 2.0 zoom like that, as I'm often shooting in situations where light is not there, and I really can't use flash...

With the recent announcements from Leica, may be time to switch back. YOu've had plenty of time to save, that's for sure.

I think you may have just won the award for longest bump ever. Not entirely sure though, will have to check with some sources.

It's like that scene in "Seven" where the guy chained to the bed with the air fresheners hung from the ceiling suddenly sits up straight and starts gasping.
Nice work MD :D

I think he means 30D. D30 was one ancient camera. Mine's collecting dust somewhere...

No way the 30D was around in 2001 - look at the date of the OP.
Man, talk about a necropost!

I really liked my D30, and got some really nice photos with it. http://photography-on-the.net/gallery/list.php?exhibition=1

I feel like a lot of people put to much emphasis on the body. It's not the body that delivers remarkable pictures, it's the person behind the camera. Now, the body might deliver more opportunity and that's another story, but even the D30 is certainly capable of taking great shots. The same goes for glass to a lesser extent; great glass helps articulate an intended message better imo and there are certainly some shots that just don't look good when everything's in focus.

The D30 is a great camera if you know how to work it. Just like any camera. It isn't the camera. It's the person behind the camera. That's how I look at it.
