Hey guys. A buddy of mine has a Nikon D1, and we want to take some shots of my car in motion so the wheels are blurred and the background is blurred as well to give the feel of motion.

The first time we went out, we used F10, shutter speed was way too fast, everything looked like I was parked on the highway. I think we should try something like F40 so we can use a longer shutter speed. Is this correct?

Thanks for your replies!

(Side note: We're using 3 people so this is safe. I'm driving my car, and we have another driver driving the photographer.)

Try to put it in Shutter priority (Tv) and set the shutter speed to about 1/100. Depending on how fast the car is moving, make it faster or slower. Set ISO dependent on light conditions.

Good luck! Drive safe!

Here is a good example of what you want I think. Difference here is my friend "panned" the shot, meaning the photographer was stationary at the side of the road and followed the car with the camera as it passed. I think this shot was at F/20 and 1/40th sec I believe, but the "exif" info is there as well. Hope this helps.

You can also get some interesting results using the "motion blur" effect in PhotoShop. This car was actually parked in the garage (notice there's no driver!)...
