I'm fairly new to my EOS 10D, but am seriously loving it. The only problem is that I got a Canon EF 75-300mm and a sigma 12-24 wide angle lens. This means that any time I want to take a quick shot, I normally must change my lens or deal with what I've got. I need to by an affordable (yea right) multi-purpose lense that can handle my active lifestyle. Any advise?

canon or sigma lens?

Well, if price is not a factor, go for the Canon. :)

do you know if sigma has a lens for very active photos? I am often taking water shots.

What type of water shots? There 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto lens is very nice. I used it for a while.

Well something 24-70 would get that done I think. http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Sigma_Zoom_Wide_Angle_Telephoto_24_70mm_f_2_8_E X_DG_Macro_DF_Autofocus_Lens_for_Canon_EOS,__80965 71

thanks. I checked it out and it seems to be rather pricey. Do you know of any lenses just a bit cheaper?

Sheila,

of course ... the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI.

Very similar to the Canon 24-70/2.8 in optical quality (not in build or AF speed) at a third of the cost.

Do a forum search, there are literally hundreds of threads on this lens.

If you want something with more reach that doesn't have to be that sharp & fast, go for the Canon 28-135 IS.

Both of these lenses are very popular in the Recommended starter lense thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752).

Best regards,
Andy

PS ... it always astonishes me what people suggest when someone is asking for an 'affordable' lens
When somebody asks you which affordable car to get, do you advise him to get a Porsche or go directly to a Ferrari dealership ???

It sounds like you need a tamron 28-300. It was my first lens and has a great range. It is also SUPER light which might benefit an active person like yourself. A second consideration is that if you are always around the river, this lens is pretty cheap so if some horrible accident occurs you wont be out $900. I found this lens optics to be quite acceptable for the stype of shots you seem to be taking.

I know a member has one in the market place for sale at a song if you are intersted.

well that's my 2 cents
