Firstly, forgive me if this should have been posted elsewhere but as its software for EOS cameras I thought it should be posted here rather than in Post Processing.

I upgraded from the G5 to the 20D in December, I also upgraded from Breezebrowser to the Pro version. BB had been great at processing the RAW files from the G5, however with the RAW files from the 20D I never seemed to be able to achieve the same quality, they looked good in BB when I was working on them but when I opened them in Photoshop they looked very flat and I had most of the processing to do over.

Anyhow, I began to experiment with DPP (Digital Photo Professional) which came with the 20D and I was truly amazed at the power and performance which the program has. If like me you have been using other software for processing RAW files give DPP another go. Also, you might want to upgrade to the current version which stands at version 1.6.1

You might like to checkout this site for some hints and tips and to find out just what its capable of:

Hope this is of some help.

David

You can download DPP here (http://alpha02.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?RQF=MENU&RQS=WWUCA910&LA=1116707959312&SV=WWUCA900&menu=DR&TRF=MAIN) even if it doesn't come with your camera (I know it works for the 300D).

Hopefully that deep link works. You can always get there by browsing around canoneos.com.

Also avialible on the canon usa site but kinda awkward to locate

Yeah I like the progran alot. But I need help with the Sharpen slider? Anyone have advice on how to use this function? or should I just keep it at 0 and do my sharpening in Elements?

I couldn't find the sharpening and noise reduction in the new update. I suspect that the laptop screen is too small to show all of the adjustment pallet. Can anybody confirm that.

Thanks

Ok, I changed the resolution of the monitor and sharpening & noise reduction are not in the adjustment pallet nor in the menus. So where can I find them.

Thanks

You will find the sharpening tool when you "Convert and Save" or use "Batch Process" as for the Noise Reduction, it don't have any tools for that you will need Neat Image or something similar.

If you are not printing the image and intend to do some processing in Photoshop you don't need to sharpen the image - it's always best to do sharpening as the last process before printing.

Is Pixmantec RawShooter better than Digital Photo Pro?

Is Pixmantec RawShooter better than Digital Photo Pro?

It's my own personal view but after trying it for a week I found Pixmantec RawShooter rather bloated and less than intuitive to work with.

Canon (I feel) have kept it simple, powerful and fast - I had an image with a spot of dust on it, within DPP I was able to use the Stamp Tool to remove it, trim and re-size the image, make RAW and RGB adjustments and all from the RAW file. As I said it's personal but being able to do that saves me time within my workflow.

Using a 350d, I have tried both and found the results very good indeed with DPP, excellent detail in low contrast/shadow areas, that was much less visible after conversion with Rawshooter.

Now all we need is a RAW downloader to be included with the camera...

It comes with your camera, on a seperate CD. If it didn't come with your camera contact the store you bought it from and ask for the CD.

Puttick - try DIM from http://alanlight.com

CJFirst of all, it's strange that you didn't get it with your 350D. You should have gotten it with the camera. Have a look again in the box, is there a CD you didn't see yet?

Second, you don't need version 1 to install DPP v1.6.1. The download website (http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Patches/dpp/) says:
To install Digital Photo Professional 1.6.1 Updater, it is required that one of the following software application is already installed on your system.

* File Viewer Utility 1.1-1.3
* EOS Viewer Utility 1.0-1.2
* Digital Photo Professional 1.0/1.1/1.5/1.6.0
* RAW Image Task 1.2/2.0I'm sure you got at least one of these with your camera....
