I bought a G2 secondhand a couple of years ago. The thing is built like a tank and the models you are considering are not the slim style of P & S seen today. But it had an f/2 lens - not the f/2.8 seen on the G7 and later models (I still own a G7 for carrying in my pocket or for snorkeling.)
The G2 has a tiny screen but takes great photos (remember, these were $1000 cameras back in the day!!)
I guess as long as anything you select isn't too beat up, they're all good options. If I recall, I bought my G2 on eBay for $65 and sold it to my brother for the same amount. Hope this helps.

I still use my G5 on occasion. To me, the biggest downside of the older G series would be the horrible shutter lag.

hi macroshot! thanks for your reply :) i am aware these are not your average point and shoot and as i am a mad snapper but only have my sony walkman cameraphone (2mp!) i figured it was time to step it up and learn a bit about what i was doing hehe i also want something that is rugged and can take great self take pics at night so it has to have a flip round screen and IR remote capabilities the G-series upto G6 looks like it has what i need but do you know of any others? ideally i would want LOADS of optical zoom (12x ? 20?) and also fantastic macro capabilities as when im not taking self pics of myself holding fish 2 metres away im invariably trying to zoom in on hummingbirds over te far side of the river or bugs that are under my nose hehe but i dont think i can get a camera to satisfy all that criteria in one can i? thanks again Dan

hi crn3371! how bad is the lag on those old G series then? because that is DEFINATELY something i am trying to avoid, i have it right now and it pi$$e$ me off so badly when others are taking pics, the shutter noise goes, so they move the camera and all i get are blurred useless trippy looking fish pictures lol dagnammit, but thanks for bringing this to my attention! Dan :)

As long as you're not shooting fast moving sports it's manageable. It didn't bother me all that much when it was my only camera. Going back to it after shooting a while with a dslr the lag seems more noticeable.

If you want zoom capability, maybe the old S3 or newer S5 models are a better fit? But now you're bulking up a bit more (like a small dslr) but you pick up the extra length of that 12X zoom.
And they all have terrible shutter lag...

I still have my Canon G2 that I bought back in 2002. I need to order a new battery for it from Sterlingtek, though. Battery won't hold a charge anymore.

The G5 was the first Canon digital camera I ownd. It's the backup to my DSLR and still used occasionally in it's own right. I never cease to be impressed with the results. I have seen mint ones on eBay for about $85 or so.

I have a 5D2, XT, G7, and a G3. The G3 is the only one I am not willing to part with -- ever! As I said before, the G7 is a piece of shït; I'm going to use it as a skipping stone when I go to Lake Titikaka.
I used to have a Pro1 also, it was a flawed camera, but enjoyable to use and with a fantastic lens.

the G5 you saw at $85 must have been for spares or repairs brother! cos i been watching for weeks and they are still going for over £100 (real money) thats about $160 i think! i wouldnt mind paying this, but not for something with shutter lag this is going to seem like a really stupid question so im going to ask it ... why does the camera make the noise before the picture is taken? why isnt there a corresponding 'picture noise lag' equivalent to the lag of the camera? so that when the noise has gone, you KNOW the picture is taken? am i missing something fundamentally simple? seems to me this would cure most peoples problems ridiculous in this day and age to have shutter lag at all

That doesn't sound right! I'm pretty sure my old G3 only makes the noise when it takes the photo.
By the way, if you're in the UK and you decide a G3 is OK for you, I'd be willing to sell mine :)

LOL! bury the G7 in a bombproof box with a solar charger and spare battery so future generations can unearth it, backwards engineer their own cameras and learn from our mistakes hehehe or send it to me! i am mad keen photographer! i just dont own any kit worthy of my eye and steady hand lol! right now im using my w810i camera phone, im not complaining, i think it is brilliant! look> http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a143/Lukkbox/?action=view¤t=DSC00219.jpg and http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a143/Lukkbox/?action=view¤t=DSC01460.jpg i just wish i had something a bit less grainy once my trimming is done :( i have an optio s turning up in the post which is going to be my pocket camera but i dont mind something larger for my fishing bag so im on my knees begging send me your old camera you know you want to! lol

From another post on "the sexiest camera" poll...my vote....
other...I think the G3 is a subtle-slinky, fit-in-your-pocket, take-anywhere on a formal top hat and tails date....

Seriously...it is my travel camera....I've even learned how to manual focus it...it may not be the best for action snapshots, but that's the "nature" of all PnS beasts....

The discription I used was "mint". In this neck of the woods that is not a discription for "spares or repairs".

then i must bow for you are a far better ebayer than me sire! i looked at a listing last week for a powershot that said MINT in the title but in the decription it said it had a cracked screen and the lens wouldn't retract and was offered for spares or repair with no returns accepted, which i thought was odd if you can find me a mint G5 for $85 then i will gladly give you $20 commission! *cue mission impossible theme tune* but by sounds of things the G3 is better than the G5 overall? the G3 is dead, long live the G3!

I still own a G1 and still carry it in my car for photography 'emergencies'. The shutter lag is crazy slow so I purchased a SX10 for my wife as a p&s but still use the G1 on occasion.

G3's, G5's and G6's are nice cameras. If you can find one cheap enough they are fine but you may be able to pick up a small used P&S that will fit the tackle box easier.

G3 - as someone said shutter lag.... well total lag is terrible. Basically if you're good with cameras, you will plan ahead for your shots and at least focus/fix your exposure. The shutter lag itself isn't THAT bad is it? I thought it was like 0.1 sec or so. It's your AF lag that's incredibly slow. Today's shutter lag is like 0.06-0.07 for the SD and G series so 0.1 wasn't unreasonable back then. I believe the G3 outperformed its competitors, but the full focus is just blah.
It feels like years when I give my G3 to friends to take pictures because they take forever to focus. If you plan and prefocus you will usually be ok. Just remember to do it. It's no DSLR in speed but it's manageable.

hi there i did indeed pick myself up a pentax optio S for the tacklebox, which i can operate remotely, but i am now thinking a canon G3 might be a good camera for me to learn more about photography on as soon as i get some money! lol it's a rare commodity round here with 3 kids sucking lifeblood out of me hehehe
