Just entered the world of DSLR a couple of weeks ago with the Rebel XT (350D over here) and the EF 75-300 MKIII USM.
These aren't exactly eyeball contact shots of soaring eagles but a starting point to improve on.

Great work! Yes, birds when they are flying, do add a bit more of a challenge! :) But you have done very well with these two shots. Keep posting!

As the others, I would say that is an excellent start. If I have to try to add some contructive critique, I will admit that usually I try (I said "try", in other words sometimes I got it, most of the times I don't :D) to have some sort of light reflecting in the bird's eye. Adds a touch of life to it. I have to say also that seagulls are VERY difficult to shoot in that way, at least for me.

I agree entirely...I thought of using flash, but didn't want to scare them. It would have added some life into their eyes (or redeye :) ) Maybe I shouldn't feel so bad looking at the mess they make of my car every morning!
Thanks for the advice.
Bluetit...no...haven't made it to the zoo yet, the nearest one is 2 hours away at Edinburgh and isn't that great for getting shots or so I'm told.
