My DRebel locked up today with the Err 099 displaying. I tried everything I could think of with no luck. I was in the middle of shooting a track meet and was very disappointed. I had purchased an extended warranty with my camera from a local dealer (Nov '04). The warranty extended me to five years with a loaner promised if needed.

Knowing they were still open I went to the store and had them look it over. He discovered the shutter had froze up on my camera. He told me he did not want to try and fix it, because of the sensor behind it. Therefore he was going to have to send it to Canon for repairs, he said it would be 4-6 weeks. The loaner he gave me was a "FILM" EOS- 1N. He said he did not have anything else that would work with my lenses. He gave me 4 rolls of 24 exp. film and said he would cut me a deal on developing. :(

I went back to the meet and blew through 3 of the 4 rolls of film (72 pics) by the time it was over. I had already shot around 600 shots with the DRebel. I have a business to run and can not go 4-6 weeks without my camera.

I do have a question for 20D users and those that used film SLR's. The DRebel was my first and only SLR, I have been saving for a 20D and have about enough for the Rebel XT. After using the EOS-1N today, I could tell it was incredibly faster than my DRebel and I used AI Servo. I mainly shoot sports, and have been told that the 20D will suit me. Does the 20D compare in speed to the EOS- 1N? I was using my Tamron 75-300mm F4-5.6 and it was faster just between the 2 cameras.
I understand the speed of the lens, so that is not what I am asking just to clarify.

I am not happy right now with the extended warranty thing, has anyone else ever had an issue like this? Is a loaner camera common? It is why I took out the warranty, thinking I would get another DSLR and never miss a beat. I would like to hear other users comments. Thanks for letting me vent  .

That's hard luck. :(

What does the wording on the agreement say?

A "similar" camera, or just some working model.

I would be angry to have a non digital camera as a replacement. Why don't they have any others? Lots of other returned cameras as well?

The wording said "loaner camera". When I questioned him about it, he said that meant anything in there used (limited) cameras. Which mainly are everyone's film camera they had ditched. I saw a Nikon CoolPix 5.0Mp, but I am sure it took a different memory card. I will talk to the owner on Monday.

that sounds like a really cool loaner camera. Why don't you take the film to WalMart and get the pictures on a CD so that you can edit them? That's what I would do.

This incident certainly points out some of the problems with extended warranties.

I can sympathize with the camera problem. I have had my Drebel for about 13 months and the autofocus is not working. I bought the camera at Circuit City and purchased the extended warrantee. This one seems to be OK. They are sending me a prepaid box for the camera and if they cannot repair it they will replace it. I believe they give a gift certificate from Circuit City for the purchase price of the Drebel. I should be sending the camera off this week and I will miss it.

triangle... not to second guess you, but I had a bad lockup and had to take out both batteries and leave it to sit about ten minutes and then it was fine. I know this is beside the point, but I just hope you took out both batteries and retried before you sent it off?

Try running a clean eraser over the contacts on the lens and the camera mount contacts. I had the same Er-99 with the mirror not working and it fixed the problem.

I had actually taken the entire grip off and on, before heading to the shop.

GOOD NEWS TODAY! :) :D

The owner called me himself and asked exactly what had happened when this occurred. I told him how I was shooting a track meet using my monopod, and was on my third card of the day when the camera froze up. He informed me that he had sold several of the DRebel's and had never seen this problem before. He said that my shutter was actually bent. I let him know that I take great care of the camera and keep it with a lid on and in the bag when not in use. I never have even gone inside the working parts, it all seems too delicate to me. He said that if I would pack up all items and bring them back in the original box, he would exchange it. I am now at home with my new DRebel and am charging my battery. I have not even fired the first shot off of this one. I am glad I bought the extended warranty after all even though I was covered through October by the manufacturer. I am covered through 2009 if I have any more problems. I am about to purchase a 20D and am very much considering buying the extended warranty on it as well. Has anyone purchased and used the Mack warranty?
