basically i need a compact camera bag for my 40D+16-35mm
don't need any additional straps, pockets etc
it has to be as small as possible ("slim"? no extra pads) but to fit my 40D+zoom lens easily
will be using it as a protection of the camera that will be in my general messenger bag so it should be as compact as possible. i only need to fit the camera and the lens. that's it. everything else (batteries, filters etc) goes into my messenger bag

thank you

Are you looking for a standalone bag which will also fit inside your messenger bag?

Or, are you looking for an "insert sleeve" which will protect your camera while it is in your messenger bag? This would not be removable to be used to carry the camera separately.

the second one
i don't need to carry it separately
i need to carry my camera in my messenger bag but with some "sleeve" protection yeah

i will add though that i tried using this (http://ser.pri.ee/sleeve.jpg) neoprene sleeve from ebay
doesn't work very well. although it does strech, it's not big enought for a 40D with a 16-35 ii, particularly for the lens

but i need something similar to that
basically as simple and light and small as possible but to fit my body+lens to protect it all

thanks

You could look at zing pouches, but ive had no experience with them but they do ones for bigger cameras, would that thing you showed cover a 1000d? and what was it listed as?

Domke makes several inserts, as does Tenba and others...

http://www.tiffen.com/results.html?search_type_no=434&tablename=domke&family=Domke+Camera+Bags&

Amazon.com, B&H, and other camera outlets will carry them.

You might want to post the internal width and height of your messenger bag and maybe someone can suggest one. You are probably going to want something about 5.7" x 4.3" x 7.5" to completely enclose the camera/lens. Alternately, you can have a shell the lens sticks down into with the camera body resting on the shell edge so the lens doesn't bottom out.

I use a Lowepro Apex 100AW (http://products.lowepro.com/product/Apex-100-AW,1900,20.htm) to carry my 40D with 10-22 attached. Very compact, it fits in my Timbuk2 bag easily. Also has the AW cover.

Get a holster such as the one below. All companies make them.

thank you. that hepled a lot. i didn't know those kind of inserts exist

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/16061-REG/Domke_720_211_FA_211_Insert.html#specifications

i am looking at this one. i think the dimensions should be about right (5x6x8)
i noticed that they have velcros on them as well. is that just to attach them to their domke bags or is there a "top" that sticks to it close it completely?

either way, i needed something like that. without any additional pockets, zippers etc as compact as it can be.

are you sure you are able to fit a 40d in to that bag?
i was looking at the interior dimensions (3.7W X 3D X 5.1H in. / 9.5 X 7.5 X 13 cm) and to me it is too small to fit a 40d

on the other hand, i was considering this lowepro TLZ 25 (http://products.lowepro.com/product/Cirrus-TLZ-25,1914,8.htm). the dimensions seem fine but i am curious if i will be able to fit 40d properly with a tripod clip attached to the camera.

any ideas?

The Domke bags have a strip of contrasting velcro around the inside perimeter to which the inserts can be "attached" so they don't shift around from your intended layout. You could add a piece of self-stick velcro inside your messenger if you wished. There are no "tops", however a divider from an old bag could be used if the velcro matched to attach on one edge and "flop" across the top as necessary.

Sorry, it's a Lowepro Apex 120 (http://products.lowepro.com/product/Apex-120-AW,1902,20.htm) not a 100. Pretty much the same design just a tad bigger. It holds my 40D with 10-22 attached (and will fit with the lens hood reversed), extra battery, remote release, memory cards, lens cloth, a filter and that was fairly full. I also have a small Lowepro lens case for my 500mm attached to the slip lock loop on the side.

Tamrac Express 6.

Fits gripped body + 17-55mm/2.8 IS (which isn't small).
