View Full Version : Why does the 1Ds Mk2 produce such huge RAW's?

I read somewhere around here that the 1Ds Mk2 produces RAW Images around 40MB in size each. My 20D produces images around 10MB. Now the 1Ds Mk2 is 16MP, my 20D is 8MP, so shouldn't its RAW's be 20MB?

My only theory why there is a difference is that the 20D produces 12bit RAW's, and the 1Ds Mk2 something else (16bit RAW's?)

40MB sounds like a mistaken statement made somewhere.. they may have been referring to the converted 8 bit tiff.

The average size of my raw (CR2) images coming off MY 1DsMkII is between 14 and 16Mb, and more tend towards 14 then 16. Converting to TIF usually gets me, I thought a 50Mb size, but I frequently crop befor econverting, so not sure. Okay Iwent downstairs and checked it on a photo I was going to convert anyway.

The answer is 47.5Mb for 8bit and 93.2 for 16bit TIF conversion.

Don't ask me for jpeg size, there ar way too many variables, like about 40 different combinations of setting L, M1, M2, S and compression levels 1-10. And then the usual scene variance.

Ditto that on mine.
