How common is the Err 99 on the 20D? I realize it is a catch all code.
I just had it happen for the first time today. Missed a couple of great shots before I realized what happened! Fortunately just some nature shots.

Not really sure.
Some people have it as a weekly event, others like myself have never had it (10000 shots, no issues).
I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago to try and determine what the common factor was. I a nut shell there didn't seem to be one, however three things did seem to make them more likely. The first was non-canon lenses and flashes, the second is dirty lens contacts, and thirdly a Battery Grip with contact issues.
Hope this is of some help

I was using a Tamron 2x TC with a EF 70-200 f/4L. This combo gives me autofocus, I hope it doesn't happen all the time!

A TC is supposed to be a straight though connection, as there is no control of the optice required, could be contacts though, twice as likely to be an issue!

I got it once when i tried a second hand sigma zoom on my 20d. The camera refused to work with the lens at all.

Was on a wedding shot this weekend (travelling out of town). Pop in my Sigma fisheye lense and my 20D gave me the Err 99. I remember that lense do work with the 20D when I first got the camera..... very weird. I didnt bother wondering or thinking why since I was on assignment.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts?
BTW are all the contacts on all lenses/cameras gold plated? I know of issues of having different metal types in contacts under certain conditions.

Just had it happen today for the first time.. A little over 2000 shots and it was with the 18-55 kit lens. Powered off and back on. The camera sounded like it took the shot but I never saw the image in the LCD. That's when I discovered the err99. The previous shot a few seconds before was fine.
I wonder if it could have anything to do with handling or humidity as well as non-canon lens?

I would try a dry cotton bud first, failing that a tiny bit of Isopropal Alcohol (like what was used to clean tape heads) on the bud (don't spash it onto the cotnacts  ). Be very careful with them, do use anything harsh or abarasive on them, they will be hard/expensive to repair.

Very gently take a pencil eraser and dab the contacts. So gentle that no fragments come off the eraser.
Didnt realize post was so old.....Bleeeeargh

Just to throw something else into the mix here, I've had this happen with a Seagate Microdrive installed in my 20D. I reformatted it and then it was ok...

This happened on my 10D, I sent it to canon, they ended up replacing my shutter (under warranty)
