Trying to learn the best way to take outdoor photos with on camera flash. What do you think?

Nice photo, but sorry, not a fan of the pose.

The fist-under-the-chin pose always tends to make the subject look as though they are punching themselves. Maybe place the palm of the hand flat on the floor, next to her knee.

Moving the camera lower, thereby making her neck appear a little longer, might also improve the overall feel if the shot,

Just realised your question.....

Was this with the cameras own built-in flash or an EX flash unit?

The shadow would indicate that the flash is actualy a bit higher than the camera, so I am surprised that its "on camera".

What WB setting did you use? Looks like it was "Auto" - but I may be wrong!

Quite evenly lit, but maybe a little more ambient light could have helped

It was auto white balance and an on the camera ex flash. The pose was chosen by my daughter. I took the photo standing on a 3 step stool above my daughter.
