Will Canon make a better telephoto lens in the future for G10/G11?

Hi Ckin2u.

This camera could have been released 2 years ago, around the time the G7 came out. It's a good camera, but there are no new significant new technologies in the G11 specs that haven't been released before. Canon just left users of the nostalgic G4 hanging for this model the whole time, forcing them to buy pieces of crap like the G5 and G7 in the interim.

Hmm, it was the G9 that came out two years ago and I bought one. I also bought a G3 when it came out; there was no G4. My G9 easily produces better images than my G3 and I expect that the G11 will produce better images than the G9 or G10. Although I've never used a G5 or G7, those cameras are rarely described using such derogatory terms. In particular, the G7 was highly regarded and is usually credited as being the camera that convinced Canon to continue with the G series Powershots.

Probably not for awhile would be my guess. They sway the direction the marketing folks direct. Right now ...wide or wider is the fad. So if you look at most of the advertising for P&S cameras it looks like " wide angle 28mm - 140mm" lens.

That is why I didn't buy a G10 and bought a G9 instead. There is no combination of internal TC with/with out add on lenses via adapter that will get the G10 out as far as the G9 can go native or with the same setup. Unless you like to walk/run a lot. Usually you can step backwards a few steps or stich a couple of frames or use a wide angle lens to get near the same wide as the G10/G11 will get you.

But you've probably already figured this out.

I don't buy point & shoot cameras (or rangefinder cameras) for telephoto work. I buy them because they are easy to carry around. A telephoto lens would detract from that.

My thoughts exactly. A P&S is a P&S simple at that. It has it's limitations and there comes a time when you should have a DSLR handy instead.
