here is my shot of a kid. what am i doing wrong? i've tried it in full color and in a two tone - - neither of them have a nice "pop". any suggestions on what else i can do? would changing my lighting have helped

I like em, they're sharp. I think your PP may need some tweaking, but I actually like the 2nd one as it is.. it's got a gritty feel to it.

Needs contrast and saturation increased.

The second one reminds me of the Michael Jackson Thriller video. Kinda' ghoulish. The kid will like it, the mom will not.

Is the "clarity" jacked up in this photo?

The top one looks a little underexposed.

"Pop" can mean lots of things. To most it means lots of contrast, sharp focus and high saturation. While an image with pop will have one two or all of these even before all of those the image needs is to be well lit, well exposed and have dynamic posing. This image is not well lit, and the pose is rather static, and that I believe is why it lacks pop.

Move them 10-12 feet from the wall. Already there? Double it.

A little contrast helps it to pop. Before and after.
