We're having a tag (garage) sale this weekend, and I hung some of my 12x18 prints along one of the walls, matted for a standard ready-made frame.
And guess what? I sold one! :D Now, I refrain from offering my selling price because it wasn't very high, but I'm a beginner without a lot of confidence... and this was after all a tag sale. What really inspired me was the number of people who complimented my work (obviously a more forgiving bunch than the POTN crew :p ).
Just wanted to share my good day with you. By the way, sale proceeds are for another lens, of course. :D

That's very cool! can we see the photo you sold.
Edit: I guess I'm anti-pro because I give prints to family for free :D

Congrats on the sale. I think many of the members of this forum would love to sell their work - and lots do - so well done. As for being a pro....whats a pro hey?!

Your first sale is always the most special. I framed the bill($50 Solid) with carbon receipt of my first sale. Call me nuts, but if photography is your thing, then it's like your first steps. I was also published in a local paper's sports section, thats also framed.
Congrats, keep selling, you never know if you can get recognised, it's not as hard as you think if you push the right buttons. I'm probably going to be published by Ford in one of their Mustang brochures soon. I only just turned 22..........

Thanks, everyone! Congratulations, Persion-Rice on your prospective publish by Ford. Hope it happens. I wish I were 22 again... :(
Here's the photo you asked to see, aam1234.

Thanks, Photosguy. Especially coming from a Goldmember! But I just happened to be at the right place, at the right time. Sometimes I think that's half the battle.

:D More times than most would admit. But you still have to "see" it & get it, right?
Who was it that said, "F/16 & be there? ;)

Karen,
That is a beautiful pic. Congratulations on your sale!
I sold one of my dog pics to the dog's owner. Didn't make a dent in the price of the gear I have.

Thanks Bonnie, and congrats on your first sale.
LOL - you are so right! With what I made on the print, I will only need another $8,000 to cover the camera, lens, printer, monitor, computer, Wacom, software, mat cutter, inks, paper, and educational materials needed to produce it.

I have not EVEN added it up yet. I am afraid to.
I have a new laptop coming on Monday that I can take with me to the dog trials, the mat cutter came last week--and on and on. I luckily have not had the urge to go out and get another lens for now. I lust mightily after the 70-200 2.8 -but I haven't really needed it yet. I am trying to learn to shoot with what I have.

Nice shot!
I think the official definition of a 'Pro' is if the majority (usually all) of your income comes from your photography, 'semi-pro' if it is a good regular sideline!
I get $$$ from the odd job/project, not regular, defiantly not pro, I consider myself 'Free-lance', or an opportunist ;)

Welcome to the forum, Richard, and thank you.
Thanks, Jay - very much appreciated.
Bonnie... make sure to get the IS if you do get the 70-200mm 2.8. After all, it's only another $500! :D (Seriously, I wish I had...)

Congratulations Karen, that's a lovely shot. :)
I agree with the others, don't sell yourself short. Yes being in the right place is important, but you've got to see the shot and compose it and expose correctly. You've done that - definitely a semi-pro ;)
I know how you feel, I sold my first pictures last year - what a buzz :) :)

To tell you the truth, cfcRebel, the only thing I see at 5 in the morning are the insides of my eyelids... POTN keeps me up too late. :D
This was taken at dusk in a tiny fishing village in Maine. We are heading back up to Maine this weekend, with our fingers crossed for sunshine and a moose!

Keeping my fingers crossed for that moose, Karen! Once, in Alaska I tried to chase down a bull moose for a photo but couldn't get close enough. :(
I did manage to get a few mamas and calves but I am still longing for that big rack....

I'm not sure what I'd do if I did see one, Maureen! Probably head in the other direction.
Every year Jim and I go to Maine and look for a Moose. Haven't seen one yet, but there are Moose Crossing signs all over. We've become convinced it's just to boost tourism... :D
Oh well, I can always take pictures of the LLBean store.

Congrats, LadyHawk! Gotta be a big ego boost!
I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet, maybe it's too obvious. But if one person liked it, probably someone else will, too. And as long as you didn't sell the copyright along with the print, you can always print more! See if you can find any more customers. Now that you know you have something marketable, you get to enter the world of marketing. Good luck!

I would love this to be the case, but they tell me the true definition of a photography professional is one who can support himself on that income alone. I would have to live in the woods and start eating leaves... :D
