View Full Version : How limited is the dynamic range of the G10

Hi,

I'm looking about getting a G10 as I refuse to pay the release price of the G11 and was just wondering about the so called poor quality of dynamic range. Excess noise I could remove with Noise Ninja so I guess it's just the dynamic range issue thats holding me back slightly. Does anyone have comparison shots of the DR against other cameras? Can it be corrected by shooting RAW and then sorting out in PP? Is it really a problem?

Many thanks

This review (http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/g10.htm)can give you some idea by comparing it to a Nikon D40. Scroll down to the High ISOs section.

OK thanks for the replies guys. As I've just sold all my slr gear this will be my only camera, used mainly for landscapes and odds & sods so I was a little dubious about certain landscape shots with the limited DR.Perhaps I should wait until the S90 comes out as it will be a slightly cheaper option than the G11. I must say though I was impressed with how noise ninja leaned up a couple of test G10 pics I had! I'd only shoot at low ISO so it's just the question of DR really. I'm looking for jacket pocketable so that puts the new M4/3's out of the question, not to mention their astronomical price.

The G9 has a DR of 10.1 stops, the G10 has a DR of 10 stops and I'll take a wild guess that the G11 has a DR of 10.2 stops, most modern DSLR's have between 11 and 12.
It's not a huge problem, but you do have to work a little harder sometimes to not blow highlights, etc.

You can see the G10 and many other cameras DR here: http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/DxOMark-Sensor/Camera-rankings

Since you only have the SD880 for now, you might want to read this review (http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/compacts/sd880.htm) of it, while you wait for the "next best thing" to show up.
