Hi,

Just recently purchased the Powershot S30 and very happy......till the FujiFilm Compact Flash 64MB Memory Card (which WAS working ok for a couple of days) started reporting 'CF Card Error'.

I've tried reformating it through the camera menu but get the same message after trying to view a picture just taken.

Is there any sort of reason for this? Is there any solution?

Am I being punished for buying cheaper Fuji Flash Cards?

Should I just return it to the store and instead purchase the massively more expensive Canon flashcards?

Diego

ps the card that came with the camera is working ok.

I've had the same problem with a Dane Elec 256MB CFC, after 3 months of regular use.
My S30 can see the presence of the card (doesn't show the message "card not present") but it's unable to recognize or format it. I think the CF card could be defective and I'm going to send it to the seller for an exchange, but I'm not convinced.
Does anybody know if it's possible trying to fix this problem performing a kind of "low level format" on the CF cards?

I don't think the brand of card makes a difference. I have a similar problem with two cards, a 128Mb PNY and an 8Mb Canon card that came with my camera. I have a couple of other cards that I have repeatedly re-formatted for the camera with no problem.

I have a Canon PowerShot A10 camera and a Dazzle flash card reader. My problems started when I took the card I had previously formatted for the camera and ran the Dazzle CFPREP utility on it to try it in the card reader, and I took the card formatted for the reader and attempted to format it in the camera. Now I cannot read either card. The camera tells me I have a CF card error, and when I try to format, it shuts itself off. The Dazzle card reader program tells me I have an unrecoverable disk error.

I have gone back and forth with the support desks of both companies, with no success in resolving this problem. Canon says their program is fine, and it is Dazzle's problem. Dazzle says that my CF cards are corrupted and need to be replaced. They are both brand new cards, so why is this? They don't have an answer.

My hunch is that there is some sort of compatibility issue between Canon's and Dazzle's formatting utilities. Does anyone know anything about either of these programs that would cause this problem? I thought of the possibility of a low-level format, too, but came up with nothing relevant in a web search. I would like to find some utility capable of erasing whatever damage these programs have done, to get the cards back to their new factory condition.

I have posted a similar topic with a IXUS V3 using a FUJI 128 MB compact flash card. Debbies response also rings true. I have plugged my card into a reader (not Dazzle) also - it kind of worked then crashed (now that i think back). I wonder if this lack of incompatibility between software or hardware between all these companies is to blame?? Extremely annoying.. Unsure if the reader has made my card intermittent??/ unusable.

Glad to know i`m not the only person having these small but annoying problems.

Hi Folks,

Had the same problem when using a Fuji 128MB CF card on my PowerShot S30. Tried to get help from Canon support, but they were completely useless. Spoke with CF association and they say that all cards have to fully comply with their test suite/specs, so it doesn't sound likely that the CF card is at fault.

I would guess it is a software problem with the camera(s) and is something Canon need to sort out immediately. They should be using a journaling flash file system such as YAFFS for the NAND flash that is in the CF card.

Here is my thread that I started a while back:
