Trying out my new 40D on my Bulldog :)

I upgraded from my 400D and it arrived this afternoon so I took my favourite subject into the garden....C&C welcome :)

Congrats on the 40D. I just bought a new one too.
Nice photos. There is a hair on the left side that is a little distracting against the background in the first one. The photos are well exposed and the first one is very sharp.
The second one looks like it was shot at a wide Ap with the focus mainly on the dogs chest. Always aim for the eyes.

Thanks for your comments... I hadn't even noticed the hair...I've cloned it out tho and you're right it looks better!!
The second one I thought was a little soft on the eyes too...I had the centre focus point only on and always point at his eyes...I have this problem alot using the zoom on my sigma lens. Still I'm not going to blame my tools because I'd imagine its the workmans fault after all :rolleyes: practice practice practice!

Unless the second photo was recomposed during post, the dogs chest is the center of the frame. With a long Non IS lens it is also very easy to shift your focus. Get the fastest SS you can get and dont wait to fire once it is in focus.
Your dog does seem to be use to posing though.

You're right I did recompose...I tend to do that alot...is it a bad idea?? Is this the reason my focussing is hit and miss?? :rolleyes: And Bubba is soooo used to my telling him to stand! wait! sit! smile! that he legs it at the mere sound of the camerabag unzipping lol :D

Thank you! I'm super chuffed with it, these were my first shots, I really like it compared to my 400D...I've got a Tamron 17-55 2.8 arriving this week (couldn't stretch to the Canon lol) so I'm hoping Bubbas gonna be in a good mood for all the practicing :lol:

You got him/her to stand still ??? My niece has an English Bulldog and it took over 50 pics to get one I liked and it was a stance like the one in your second shot (the one I like the best).

Haha he's brilliant for a stubborn bully I have to say... he sits, stands and waits on command. He also walks off lead and sits at the roadside just at the clik of the fingers...Cesar Milan played an important part in his formative months as a puppy thanks to Sky TV!!! ;)

I love the first one - the tongue hanging out is brilliant! lol. It's a little too centered for me but otherwise it's great - good exposure, good DOF, good focus, etc. The second one has a bigger DOF and looks a little brighter and flatter.

Recomposing can cause you to miss the point of focus. I always move my points to the object that I am focusing on.

First is perfect. The composition is to the right enough to keep it off centered. Good for you not blowing the whites!!! Handsome Boy he is.
