when I was in Carlingford last week I took these shots of a monument which is beside King John's castle , which is also beside Carlingford Lough, which is beside the Cooley Mountains , and almost beside the Mourne Mountains which are just across the water

Thomas D'Arcy McGee was born here in this beautiful place

Very nice. There has been a recent controversy in Ottawa over the pistol that was used to assassinate McGee.

It was in a private collection that was to be auctioned off, so there is a big push by the local museums to raise funds to buy it for public display.

A link here: http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/05/02/mcgee-gun050502.html

McGee was the only Canadian political MInister murdered; his killer was a Fenian supporter.

Marie,

Please, let me thank you for bringing up an interesting bit of Canadian history.

Generally, we're a very dull bunch, but this is an exception, assassination is atypical of the Canadian political chronology.

I will let you know about the outcome of the auction once I can find some details.

My personal family history has a few twists involving Ireland/Scotland and the penal colonies in Australia. Makes for interesting research, but not something I would want to brag about................

Marie, an update on the auction:

The piece sold for C$105,000 to the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que. This is right across the river from Ottawa, and is one of the National Museums.

The local Bytown Museum, (Bytown was the original name of Ottawa, named after the man who built the local canal system) had raised C$43,000 towards the bid, but was quickly out-bid by private collectors who all lost to the National Museum.

By the way, his "killer" wast he last person hanged in Canada.

Another note, the bullet taken from McGee is said not to have matched the gun!

Where was CSI then?

many were condemned for little or nothing and shipped away to far off lands

wow, thank you for the news Jim

I saw that about the 'killer '
and I felt in my heart that the man was wrongly hanged
( as soon as I read what was said)http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif
but I didn't know about the bullet not matching

thank you very much

Interesting, I had either never heard about this part of Canadian history or learned it at a time when I was too young to care.

Thanks for letting me in on a piece of my country's history.
