Looking for a good quality rain cover. I`m using a griped 50D and 70-200 2.8. Also using a 580 EXII mounted below camera on a monopod. Do you all worry about covering the flash from the rain? Any help is appriceated.

I don't think it would be good for it at all. It seems like it would be simple enough to weather proof it a little bit... with some plastic, tape, etc...

Yeah, I may have to come up with a "homemade" type cover for the flash.
I guess my opening question should have been better worded I`m also looking for a good quality cover for the 50d.

Last season I used the Op/tech RAINSLEEVE. They work great and take up very little room if not needed. They are sold in packages of 2. They now have a style which will also cover the flash along with the lens/body. I picked up some and will try them the next time it rains during a game. The new one is called Rainsleeve-Flash

Here's some covers, from cheap to not-so cheap. The last link item looks pretty cool to me.

So far, I've been lucky (no rain). But I have been carrying a large trash bag in my backpack and a light rain jacket. Most likely, if it starts raining, I'm gonna head to cover.

Rain sleeves sound good.

The BEST cheap option I have come up with is a pair of Large or XL rain pants...the thick kind is best

One leg goes down the monopod (and can help cover the flash) the other leg goes down the lens.. The snap button on the legs usally keepit tight around the lens hood...otherwise a thick rubberband will help.

Then you use the pants opening for your viewfinder

But I just ordered the Think Tank to replace that option...I have been SO VERY impressed with everything I have that I have from TT decided to get the best to protect my gear!

Update. I opted to try the OP-Tech rain sleeve for the 50D. The flash I covered with a Quart size zip lock bag and a rubber band. Both seemed to work good, although it was only a light rain. I`m still thinking about a little better cover just have to decide which one.
The weather forcast for this week is for light rain, UGH! Good thing is I have to be out of the stadiums by half-time to make the papers deadline,

I've used the Aquatech flash cover for years and it works great. Sure there are cheaper alternatives, but mine has lasted and lasted and lasted. It eats a little over 1/2 stop of flash power which need to be accounted for.

I purchased a Kata e-690 kast week to covcer my gripped 50D and 70-200. Didn't work out as intended. It was too small, but it did keep a lot of water off the body. I'm going back to trade it in for the e-702, which should fit my gear. We have some night games here in NJ on Thursday this week due to the Jewish holiday. And of course, the forecast shows a 40% chance of rain. I do like the thinking behind the Kata cover though.

I know the OP is looking to spend some money, and this doesn't answer their question. But I had to chuckle when I saw the title of the thread.

I shot a football game Saturday night - rained the whole first half.

Had another photog give me some of these bags to use instead of the trash bag I had taped up on my camera (with a Ziploc over my flash). The bags along with rubber bands worked great.

Cost: a little over $2.00 at Walmart for 100.

(I used one over the body, one over the lens, and one over the flash).

Maybe so, but I dont mind spending $150 to protect $10,000+ worth of equip... especially considering if the bag rips or leaks you lose a chance to take pictures as well.

To each his own I guess....

Looks like McGyver was that other photographer!

To each his own I guess....

That's true.

And if I ever get a camera, lens and flash that's worth $10,000+, I'm gonna spring for a camera condom too.

I found an awesome solution last weekend. I was was getting ready to go shoot and it started raining, I went to grab a plastic bag, but grabbed Press N Seal. It works great and you can just wrap the parts of the camera you are worried about. Works Great!

Plastic bags are usually a good solution.

Used one last week with my 40D and 300 f/2.8 during a medium/heavy rain at the soccer game. Worked flawlessly and was very comfortable/convenient. Last season my camera would have been stowed in my bag to keep it dry. Great value. Will leave one in my bag always from now on.

It's always good to be ready for safe photography.
