Polarizing Filter Question

As I understand it, circular polarizers should be used on cameras with auto focus and/or auto exposure, while the liner type should be used for manual focus cameras. My question is how do you know if your polarizing filter is circular or liner? I have 3 filters, all of which only say Polarizing Filter on them with no indication as to which type. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Al
