View Full Version : avoiding auto focus using IR shutter release?

I have been trying to use my G2 to take shots in low light through a window. To avoid shake I have the camera on a tripod and I'm using the remote infra red shutter release. I have set the focus manually since there's so little light available, and I'm shooting through a partially reflective window. The trouble is the auto-focus light flashes and I'd like to avoid that since it startles the subject (deer feeding at dusk) and probably messes up the focus too. Is there any way to defeat the auto focus while retaining use of the remote?

I have the same request, but for another reason :
sometimes I want to take pictures without people knowing they are 'in focus' :

sometimes, on the streets in town, people are interesting 'objects' to take pictures off.

people tend to 'pose' once they see a camera pointed at them.

The G2, with the tilting LCD screen is great for 'candit' shots, if that small light would stay off ...

Same question as the author of this topic : how to switch off the low-light autofocus light.

If you set your camera focus manually then the AF light doesn't go off, the only way to do this is to have the LCD screen open (even 1/4 the way is ok if you don't want it fully open) I'm not sure if this works while using the remote but you could set your MF to the range you require then turn on the remote or else you could always put some tape over the AF light :)

I'm pretty sure that if the auto focus light flashes, then the camera is attempting to modify the focus. And so covering the light with tape is likely to really confuse the thing.

I did do manual focus with the LCD screen open. (how else?) Apparently using the remote is what causes the auto focus to start.
