Hello, I've heard of people renting lenses, and using them for a day before making their decision to buy. I'd like to do the same, but I don't think I have a rental shop like that around here. I live in Mont Vernon NH....
How do you find these places? Is there any specific store name that rents out photography equiptment or something?
Thanks!

You might have to look in the phone book for that answer around your area. Most medium sized retail locations (bigger than the mom-n-pop, but smaller than the dumb "super" stores) will rent lenses. You may want to call one of them and ask or they might direct you to a location.
I know in the Washington DC/Northern VA area Penn Camera rents lenses for the day or for the week, but only at their DC location. Found out because I did some calling around to find out the same information in my area.

I've been wondering this as well. My local shop doesn't do it and even if they did it would be so expensive that one might as well just buy the lens. I'm going to a zoo next month and I'd like a better lens than my 75-300, like a 100-400 or 300 prime. But I would probably never use the lens enough to justify buying one.

I don't know about your area, but here in Arizona, in the Phoenix area there are two great stores that rent gear. They are Tempe Camera and PhotoMark. i.e a 70-200 f2.8L IS for $25.00 a day. and less per day for a whole weekend. I did that before buying my 70-200 just to make sure I would like it.So if you should visit on vacation, stop by and see them. Both are super stores filled with helpful and professional staff. And,NO I don't work for them!

Thanks for the tip. I've been meaning to go by one of the stores anyway, so this will give me a good excuse. :)

Does anybody know of any stores in Albuquerque, New Mexico (or in that area) that rent lenses? Specifically 20d compatible. I'll be heading for a multi-day hike in the Pecos Wilderness and would like to take along a wide and long-ish zoom. I have been stressing over what lenses to buy and just cannot decide . . . so, I thought, renting was a swell way to put off making a decision until a later date.

Georges camera in San Diego is probably the biggest around here; and I know the owner.
Great people who deal with anything from digital to med format and everything in between.

WWW.CALUMETPHOTO.COM (http://www.C) rents almost everything, tripods, stabilizers, gyroscopic stabilizers, lenses, cameras, medium format backs, you name it.
They have locations in:
New York City
Boston (Red Sox suck:) ) Massachusetts
Philadelphia, PA
Bensenville, IL
Chicago (White Sox suck:) ) IL>
San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Santa Ana, Hollywood and San Diego, California.
The prices aren't too bad either. You can download a PDF file of about 30 pages which is their rental catalogue.
Happy hunting.

Look up your nearest Canon dealer in a brick and mortar store. Go in and ask them if they rent Canon lenses. If they don't do it, then ask them who does.
You will find one by the time you get to your nearest major urban area.

According to Tempe Camera as mentioned above they do ship rentals out of town:

The rental staff, who are all professional photographers themselves, will understand your needs and set you up with the right equipment for a successful shoot. We're happy to ship out of town.
