My friend wants to buy a G11, he mentioned purchasing this, but I think it is a bit too much for a point and shoot.

Perhaps your friend is doing the same thing I am. looking at equipment that is really more than needed for this type of camera - thinking of something bigger in the future. I was looking at the g11 and a pretty big flash for it, thinking that if I went dslr later, the extraneous equipment was good to go. I'd say that tripod looks good. I've not compared it to others.

It looks like nice stuff. What does it cost?
I agree with Scott. If your friend is going to move to DSLR in the future then I would advise him to buy the best tripod that he can afford now. (Unlike digital cameras, tripod technology does not change yearly.)

Don,t know if you can get them where you are but this is what I use with my G10.

The 014 is a zero series tripod, meaning its upper leg diameter will be around 22mm. For a four segment you would have about a 10mm bottom leg diameter and for five make that 7mm approximately or 1/4". I don't think this overkill for the G11. He might rethink to a monopod with a tilt head if he just wants some stability. Since this is aluminum it's going to be heavier by far than his camera and he also might consider finding something in CF to make his support more in line with the camera he's lugging around.

It's a beautiful tripod and probably more than what one would need for a g10... Although, a good tripod will last a lifetime and can be used on other cameras.

A few years ago my sister and I went to Yosemite with a G2 and a good Slik light aluminum tripod. I remember walking down a trail with the tripod on my shoulder, cam attached. I got great pix including many good panoramas. It was light and very much solid enough for a light cam.
Something to consider in choosing a tripod for the G is, because of the lightness of the G, you don't have to carry a heavy tripod and you don't have to spend big bucks. I used my G for 2 years before going DSLR. Having the extra money in my pocket and less weight on my shoulder was IMO a good thing. Velbon and Slik have similar light weight, solid, inexpensive tripods.

I use a Gorillapod for my G10! Love it.

So not to reiterate what's already been said... a good tripod is a wise investment if he wants to do long exposures and/or time lapse... does the G11 do time lapse?

This Dolica AX620B100 (http://www.amazon.com/Dolica-AX620B100-62-Inch-Proline-Tripod/dp/B001D60LG8/ref=cm_cmu_pg__header) on Amazon was more popular and less expensive than the Manfrotto 785B mentioned above. Anyone have any comments on it? I'm thinking of getting it to use with my G9.
