View Full Version : Firefox image quality?

I've just been looking at some new images that I have uploaded to my gallery and was very disappointed to see horrible posterization in the shadows.
The strange thing is, if I view the same image (via the same website) using Internet Exporer instead of Firefox, it goes away. The images look exactly as they do in Photoshop and Lightroom???
Has anyone else experienced this?

That file is being color managed by Firefox. Happens with some wider gamut monitors and their monitor profiles. You can disable color management in Firefox until a fix is found.
Photoshop and LR2 properly color manage, so you shouldn't see anything there, but IE doesn't color manage at all, so again you won't see any issues.

Here are some screenshots to illustrate...
The first is Firefox. Look over the subjects left shoulder and you'll see the posterization:

This is the same page in Internet Explorer. The posterization is gone, and this is how the image looks in Lightroom and Photoshop...

Interesting, I can see the change with the posterization in the top picture. Although if I bring it over to my basic Dell second monitor, which is a bit darker, its gone.

Sounds like FF doesn't like your profiles too ;)

What version of firefox are you using?
I had some color issues with firefox once and it turned out to be a color bug within the current version of firefox.
I updated to the latest version and the problem was fixed.

Latest version 3.5.3 - Problem image has an sRGB profile embedded while the other does not, something to do with that? So only me and Full-Frame here are having this issue?

I'm using version 3.5 too. Funnily enough, I'm now looking at the images on my laptop, using the same version of FireFox and they are both the same, no posterization.
This makes me think that it is either my monitor, or something to do with my spider3 Elite...
Any ideas?

It has to do with your monitor profile, i.e. spider3+monitor combined. Read the posts below for a second and third opinion

I turned off color management in firefox, but why am I suddenly seeing the issue in both FF, IE, Chrome, and Flock? Sure it goes away if I tilt my monitor way back, but I think my monitor has a mind of its own now.

Don't worry I've had this problem, and several other designers I know. Mozilla has screwed up the 3.5 release. I've tried various solutions and it's noticeable even on a CRT screen, though the effect is lessened with the colour management switched off it's still there.
The 3.5 release was a rushed development, and it shows with the amount of bug fixes and other issues. QC has gone downhill.
It also affects certain types of highlights. So it's a gamut issue they have with their image rendering engine.
For reference two independent systems (XP/Vista) here calibrated with a Eye One Display.
