My friend has a band, They've asked me to do some shots for their upcoming album promo. I said NO, I'm not that kind of picture bloke. They said have a bash see how they go, if we like...we use. If not you gain some experience. So with that in mind I scouted a couple of locations and took one band member out for a practice run. What do ya think.
I have about two weeks to improve before I have to do it with all four.

I like the first and last. What is your light source in the first, and where?

Very cool gig if you do it, and I would if I were you!! Depending on the music I would most likely go color compared to the B&W. If the rest of them are anything like him...Very colorful.:-)

Well, I'd get his Mum to choose the color combinations, but I love the location and mostly the lighting. I'd try getting him to work on more than one expression and not to do all the images with "screw you attitude" on his face ... try to work in some smiles, some not looking at the camera, some sitting on various things, more turned toward the side looking over shoulder, get some props in the sense of stools, sofas, or something, preferably something totally out of place such as your tunnel. What's your equipment?

Lighting is a sore subject. I bought a whole heap of lights, only to discover that I couldn't run them off of a power pack. So with no time to sell them and buy the right lights, I had to use speedlights. The first shot was two 580 ex. The on camera flash was bounced off the wall to the right. The second unit was fired from behind Jeff and to the left of camera, also bounced, this lights the back edge of Jeff making him pop a little, that was the plan anyway. A fast shutter speed shuts out the ambient light, making the tunnel fade to black.

Depending on the music style, that expression might be perfect. I'd like to see the second pose with the lighting of the first. He looks a bit drunk in the first shot....

Excellent photos, the aggressive stance suits the guy........looks like he takes his music seriously. The colours contrast really well I think and the location works also. Look forward to your posting some results if you take the gig.
Roger.

Hi Dwight, there's about 90 shots from this shoot a few smiling different poses etc. Mostly he likes the angsty ones. Must be an artistic statement.
I used a 20D, 17-40L and two 580 ex flash guns. With a 95cm reflector various bottletops. I think the next time I will definitely hire some bigger lights so I can use a softbox and brollie. I'm quite happy with the results, all things considered.
