hello everyone,
my friend wants me to take pictures of him at our highschool football game tonight but i have a 5.6 200mm lens. Will this be able to produce good photos? or are they going to have a lot of noise and motion blur? There are going to be lights there but i dont think they are very good
Thanks

5.6 isnt going to be fast enough..most people will recommend a 2.8 lens for night shooting.

Depends on how good the lighting is. You might be able to set your camera to max ISO/aperture and get some decent shots. I prefer 2.8 or faster for night games.

Shoot early and shoot often. I think you will be in a world of hurt when the sun goes down.
At the game last night, I wound up at ISO 3200, f/2.8 and 1/400 sec shutter speed. Your Rebel doesn't do ISO 3200 and your lens won't open up to 2.8, so you can expect under exposed pictures at best.
Can you borrow a flash to use at the game? My settings with a flash were 1/250 sec, f/3.2, ISO 800 with the flash set on ETTL.
Good luck.

i have a speedlight, the sunpak auto 444D. Will that reach the players? and i would think that it would get annoying for them

I walked the sideline last night at a high school game. The flash doesn't bother anyone. They are paying attention to the game and never see the flash.
I don't know anything about that Sunpak. I had my camera on manual set at 1/250 and f/3.2. The flash did the rest.

Think your lens will be a problem. Just posted on another thread a few minutes ago that it's 7:38pm and my 2.8 lens wouldn't have a prayer getting anything that didn't look like 'sand' from high ISO noise right now.

I shoot with a rebel xt using the canon 200mm 1:2.8 lens along with a 430EX speedlite and get decent results. I shoot in raw and process in lightroom.

Not sure how to post but if you goto flickr and look at redglide photostream under the sports set you can see the shots I am getting with my XT.
