Nice, tight shots. I like what you did with the flag in #2.

Thanks guys. This time around I did all my cropping in the camera. Wow really makes less work to do. Some people say the shots look a little soft let me if you feel the same

Don't look to soft to me! Love the very last one you just posted, and the very first one you posted. They're fantastic! I like being able to see the riders eyes, add's a great affect.
What settings did you use to shoot these?

Woah! That one is wicked awesome!!! That's my new favorite too. :-) Looks like your pretty good at the panning! I didn't even know it was possible to get such sharp images of fast moving objects with a 80-125 shutter speed. I'll have to give that a try sometime.

Yeah, I actually have a few more good ones like that. Really you will get about a 1 in 4 keeper ratio. There were lots of other photographers at the track, I ask everyone what shutter speed, all where in the 400 + range. Everyone complains that all there shots look the same, Maybe mine are not as sharpe but I'll tell they way more interesting, different, and really capture the speed involved. I'll let you know if any of them make the magazine.

Im a newb so forgive me if Im not making sense.
Overall the shots are fantastic. The composition is well done!
Id like to talk a bit more on the softness issues. Shots 2,4,9,&10 are sharp to me while the rest look as though you should have used one or two shutter speeds faster. I may be wrong but it looks like the lighting was overcast which makes me wonder if you should have gone up in ISO as well.
What do you think is the reason for the softness (lens maybe)?

Uumm no problem on the newb questions. You raise lots of good points. It's really hard to compose fast moving shots therefore you forget about the other things when your trying so hard to do just one. But your absolutely right, I should've moved to 250 or 400 / sec. Yes the day was overcast actually sunny, cloudy, raining all within the 14 laps. Changing the ISO would've helped... Again a tough thing to do when you have so much going on. It really is harder then it looks.
I don't think the 70-200 is a soft lens that's for sure, it's definitely the photographers fault. Again 400 or 800 would've helped.... but again all the other photographers are shooting like that and I wanna be different lol.

oh yeah, I forgot you were using a nice lens......definitely not soft there.
I was at the AMA races at sears point a few weeks ago and there was impending rain so almost all my shots sucked. Basically I wasnt able to do (or didnt have time to) the things you spoke of.
Im off to see some friends race this weekend (AFM racing) at sears so I'll post some samples so you experienced guys can give pointers.

Oh btw, are you having to digitally zoom (w/ editor) or are positioned close enough to the track to get those tight shots?

I love the crops, and honestly i can't complain as i've never tried anything quite like this. The one thing that would have been nice were slightly sharper photos. LOVE the last two! Maybe try a shutter speed that's a bit faster. Things are moving so quickly you'll probably still get the pan effect.
Now just to get my own 70-200 f/4 ;)

I think I mentioned I did no cropping what so ever. Oh the joys of a press-pass. Yes I could've used a faster shutter speed but I blew lots of shots. A lesson to be learned. I'm not a pro and never stated I was, I just have the luck of being really well known in the Canadian sportbike community, running RoadRipping.com does have it's perks.
