Hello everyone,

I was wondering which lens you would recommend as the best lens for taking photos at a WRC (World Rally Championship) event to go with my Cann 40d?

I have been considering one of the 70-200 L range, but being very new to photography I would very much appreciate some more experienced advice.

Many thanks in advance.

IMHO you don't need a particularly long lens to shoot WRC, certainly not ever beyond the 400mm range. A 70-200 would be just about spot on and if you can afford the f2.8 then even better.

A wide'ish lens is also a must of course. You're so close in some places that you just have to do those lovely wide angle pans.

Of course it depends what sort of images you're after. If you want driver shots in service park then a longer lens will be required.

Have fun.:)

For Rallies in general..anything between 10 & 300mm depending on the shot you want and as fast as you can afford.

There is no single "ideal" lens..i'd say 2 or 3 is the target.

I don't shoot WRC, but I do shoot rallying, and my most used lens on the 40D is 70-200 f/2.8 - love it :)

From experience as a spectator a 70-200 is good. Since purchasing my new glass and camera I have not attended a WRC although cant wait for NZ next year when I return to give it a try out. WRC is the kind of sport where you can get really close (although keep your safety in mind), thus often a big 400 is not needed if you cant afford it as you can spectate within close proximity of the cars.
