Definitely shaking some rust off and never really got comfortable with my flash settings but it is expected after not doing it for 9 months.

I take it 1/125 will not freeze them up. The color also looks off (washed) it sort of gives them a "p/s snapshot". Was the flash on M or e-ttl ?

Hahahaha!! Love #5 with the flag at his feet. Great shot.

1/125 will freeze them up if the flash is still over powering ambient but I don't understand the question. These were all 250-300s and I used both ETTL,M.

you better check your monitor because the color really pops on these. Nice stuff Danny.

1/500 will "start" to freeze action. Check the motion blur in some of the shots. If they were at 1/250-1/300 you were using h-sync I take it.
For the color have you try setting b/w points in photoshop/LR ?

They look really good to me, and the BP seems to be set perfect (for my taste). Agree though that the WP could be squeezed in a bit which will make them pop a bit more. The WP on most of them is clipping a tiny bit, but mainly due to reflections off the helmets.

Ed shutter speed has nothing to do with it really. The trick is to get the ambient level 2-3 stops below flash level regardless of shutter speed. The motion blur comes in because the ambient is too high and bleeding into the flashed exposure. Lowering the iso or increasing aperture would lower the ambient lighting and get rid of the blur. As stated I was not real happy with the night over all but I'm good at learning from my mistakes. :)

I think you are being a bit hard on yourself. These are very nice for flashed football. It's hard enough to get all the settings right but to get some good peak action is even tougher given your one shot and wait limitation with the flash.
Nice shots :-)

Yes but it is nice to get home and only have to go through 250 images instead of 1000
Thanks Kevin.

Good point. I don't have Scott's discipline to lay off the shutter so tend to spend a lot of time going though lots of unnecessary images when I am shooting without another limiter like a flash.

Dan,
Solid work. You must have really good lights to get that much ghosting at ISO 800! What is your ambient readings?
I like them, colors look good and the images are not flashed out

I've never done it myself (shooting moving subjects with flash). Do you ask permission to use flash ?

Yes you do run it by everyone first. Using flash for football is getting pretty much excepted by most schools now.

I think those are great. I haven't come up with a setup to produce anything like that at our field . Did you use a single flash ? on camera? with a diffuser? I dont see any redeye...did you fix it or was there none.
thanks

Thanks Mat, John, Bob and Bobby. Bob these were single flash 18" above camera bare. You get a little red eye sometimes but keeping the flash high or low helps a lot. Here is an old picture of my setup. I use a monopod and strap a Quantum battery to that to help with recycle times.

I'm going to try going below this week though.

That looks like a good idea. I have seen the setups where the flashes mount on the monopod underneath. Yours looks sturdy and really elevates the flash. Keeps it out of the way so you can rotate the camera, eliminates the need for a bracket.
Wonder if Really right stuff or strobist have the parts list for something like it. :)
thanks
