i have a tripod and everything but i am trying to figure out how to angle it. i assume lowest position with the head tilted down and the camera pointed up but other than that i am clueless

Yeah your looking at a camera height of about 4-5 inches below shoulder height, single softbox to camera left, almost directly to the side of the subject, and right at the height of your subject's head. If you want the light to fall off toward the waist the way it does here you may have to tilt the softbox upward a bit to feather the light off at the bottom some. If you don't have a softbox you can bounce your flash off something else, or shoot it through a bed sheet, or just hang a sheet over a window and get your subject into position with the window to one side.

i posted the result in self portrait, i added a bit too much contrast so i have to re edit it but i only have a single speedlite but i think it turned out okay!
