View Full Version : Anyone looking at or getting the 7D for performing arts?

I was planning on upgrading my body next year. I had intended to save for a 5DII due to the excellent ISO performance, and full frame sensor, however, the 7D looks very promising, and more affordable.

The 7D seems like it will have one of the BEST AF systems around. One of the gripes I have with my 40D, is that I don't trust the outer AF points, or AI servo very much. Almost all of my shots are done with the center AF point, then recomposed. I have heard mixed things about the 5DIIs AF.

I will have to wait until I see some real world examples, but the 7D seems like it will handle ISO performance markedly better than my 40D. The 40D is great for noise, but there are many circumstances where I would LOVE to shoot at 3200. If the 7D's 3200 looks like the 40D's 1600, it will be very enticing to me. However, a crop camera will never beat a full frame camera at ISO performance, I have seen many shots with the 5DII at 6400 that look fantastic with only a little bit of NR.

I found frame rate doesn't matter too much to be, but that may be because I have a 40D, which is pretty fast (5.5FPS I think?) I am always in burst mode, I don't often need it, but it can be very handy to catch a specific instant in time. the 7D hands down wins here, with the 5DII being slower than my 40D, I wonder if I will notice it more?

Not sure about overall IQ yet, but I have a feeling the 5DII would win that department hands down. The IQ I have seen, and the way full frame sensors make images "pop" as well as the bokeh they produce are just incredible.

Then it comes down to price. For those who make little to no money at this photography thing (i.e. ME) the price tag of the 5DII is pretty out of reach. Additionally, making the jump from crop to FF means I would need to replace 2 - 3 of my lenses.

If I were to buy a 7D for $1600
Sell 40D + accessories for ~$700
would be $900 out of my pocket

If I were to buy a 5DII for ~$2700
Sell 40D for ~700
Sell Sigma 30 1.4 for ~350
Sell Canon 17-55 2.8 IS for ~ 800

Would be $850 out of my pocket, but I would be down 2 lenses that I use a lot. An Equivalent zoom would cost me around $1000 (24 - 70), and an equivalent prime would be about the same (35/50L) assuming I buy both used.

Decisions decisions. If price were not an issue, I would get a 5DII hands down, but the 7D looks to be a great camera at a great price. What are you all thinking?

i am pretty happy w/ my combo (5D, 5D2) at the moment. the 7D looks good so far, though, and would be a better choice in certain situations than the 5D.

Some unprocessed JPEGS of concert shots were just posted. 1600 looks much better than my 40Ds, and 3200 looks slightly better than my 40D's 1600.

I saw those pics earlier and they look a lot better than what I can do with my 40D. As best I could decipher google's translation of the site, he was saying that the AF was locking on very fast even in such bad light, doing much better than the 5DmkII.

Did he actually get any shots in focus ;-)

The last one is not a low light shot, looking at the EXIF.

Well if the 7D lives up to all it's hype in everyday use, it's very possible I may get it in the future if I can build up some funds, but for now I'm sticking with my trusty 1D2 ;) .

So, anyone with the 7D yet? The more high ISO shots I see, the more I like it.

I'm glad I saw this thread - I'm in a similar position, hoping that the 7d will handle low-light well enough for theater/performance shooting. The 5dII is entirely outside my budget; the 7d is still going to stretch the pennies, but I'm certainly watching reports and samples closely to see if it's an option ... :D
