After researching this forum I am leaning towards the EF 100-300mm for shooting outdoor sports but then came across this lens (Canon Mt. 100-400mm) and wanted to get opinions about the two in comparison.

Is this the 100-400mm that the "top 10 polls" show so much support for?

Welcome to the forums! yes, the 100-400 is the poll topper. I would go for the longer reach for sports.

Nope!

The brand "Phoenix" is printed on the front of the lens.

The lens in the ebay auction is NOT the Canon 100-400 IS lens.

Well what really stuck out was the buy now price. For $200 I think everybody on this forum would order 10 if it was the Canon lens ;)

Is that the OK Canon 100-300mm USM or the splendid Sigma 100-300mm f4.0 HSM?

The zoom lens pictured on your eBay link is a Cosina: they manufacture "generic" lenses for quite a number of "non-brands". I have owned one some days (sold as a Soligor).

It is not such a bad piece of glass, but is a bit soft and lacks contrast compared to the Canon. Also shows noticeable chromatic aberration. But I could make some very decents pictures with it, when not trying to push it beyond its limits...

(now I've sold it and bought a Canon EF 100-100IS L and to tell the truth it definitely plays in another league= ;)

Yep,as allready said by many, the pheonix lens is pretty much not worth it.
......or if you are an enthusiast that want's above average lenses then it's most certainly a dud!

I used a tokina(?) branded version for abit-it's definitely a lousy lens, not even measuring up to the 28-300 hyperzooms at similar focal lengths

The canon 100-300usm *is* a good lens.
Buy new at B&H or similar reputable discount shops or buy 2nd hand from KEH.com.
KEH have several most of the time and are very good to deal with.Avoid the 'bargain' grade lenses to be on the safe side but anything excellent and above is well worth grabbing

.............and sorry,...i just grabbed the only 2nd have one at B&H:o :o :o :D
