a bag like the domke f-802 is a "normal bag" and then i added an insert. my gear is padded by a thin layer of foam and fairly thick canvas so obviously it's not all that safe.

Yes. In addition to my Domke bags I'll use the inserts in a regular backpack or haversack. How safe is my gear? Well, I wouldn't run over it with a truck, but it's plenty safe for normal carrying purposes. Mind you, I don't wildly sling the bag around or kick it from place to place. If you do that, then you probably want a Pelican case instead.

I have the Domke digital insert. Worth the $25 I spent for it. Gives some body to the messenger bag I use it with and some added protection. As Jon Slayer of Trolls says, don't expect it to protect your gear from being run over by a truck.
Jon might give us some indication as to whether Domke inserts protect his gear from trolls, though.

Glamdring provides that protection . . .

would the inserts give protection as good as say the crumpler mdh's?

don't have one, so cannot comment. likely not.
what are you planning?

Don't have a Crumpler, but as long as Domkes have been around (which is as long as I've been using them) I haven't had any camera damage in the bag. And the original inserts were just canvas with no padding. So I wouldn't worry. All extra padding does is add bulk and weight to the bag.

i was hoping to just use a domke insert when carrying just my camera and maybe flash and lens around without having a dedicated camera bag. I wanted to store them into a regular messenger bag like timbuk2 or chrome.
thanks for all your guys' feedback.

many people convert timbuk2 messenger bags into camera bags using Domke inserts.
If you can fit a Domke insert into the bag, then you can use it as a camera bag for sure.

that is exactly what I've done. I use the insert either in a Timbuk2 bag or in a Crumpler messenger bag

sometimes i dont want to carry my crumpler 6mdh and just want a place to stow the camera away. im thinking domke inserts in a Chrome messenger bag will work. since its a large bag, i could carry nonphotostuff in there, and then my camera gear off to a side.
brucea, which insert do you use?

this one seems promising.

I'm fairly certain that the camera lens combo pocket isn't big enough for the 40D + 24-70/2.8. It'll be on heckuva squeeze, that's for sure!
it would definitely fit with the 50/1.4 tho lol

I'm a little late here but wanted to add that the Tenba insert is great for a messenger bag:

It's a very nice insert, with flaps on the center dividers so your body can rest on top without rubbing against the lenses in the side pockets. Padding is thick and product is well made. I prefer it to the Domke inserts (I have a few of those), although the Domke do come in different configurations which can be helpful.
Good luck.
