Looking for a small P&S that has most of the qualities of the G-10, but is lighter and smaller.
I know there will be some trade off's, but I'm sure there's something close?
Your thoughts will be appreciated.
Thank you,....marc

the S90 that is getting released soon is probably the best bet. With the f2 lens you might argue it is even better than the G-series
Also the SD990 has the same sensor, so that might be worth checking out, too.

I have both a G10 and an SD990 and they are pretty much comparable. Same sensor, but the G10 probably has a better lens system. Outside in sunlight, at ISO 100, they both give excellent images. Unless I enlarge a great deal, the results from either are close to what I get with my 50D and a wide lens.
The major difference, to me, is that the SD990 won't shoot RAW.
The 990 is a little camera, and easy to carry around in a pocket. I'm glad I have it.
It actually came in very handy last month when we went to see Paul McCartney. They would let you bring in any camera that did not have a detachable lens. I didn't have my G10 with me, but I had the 990 in my briefcase so I took that. It was a very challenging photographic environment, but I got some good shots, here are a couple. I think they were taken at ISO 400.

I was just asking a similar question here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=753187). I used a G10 over a weekend and really liked it -- less blown highlights than my TZ5 or Fuji F40 with sharper detail.
I pulled several review samples of various Canons. It seems like the biggest downfall with the SD-series is (as mentioned above) the lenses don't have the same quality as the G-series. However looking at the slightly larger SX200 and SX110, the images were surprisingly close. I'm curious how the other smaller Canon sensors do with highlights/shadows.

You might also look for a SD880 per this review (http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/compacts/sd880.htm).

#2 of just Paul looks sort of grainy for 400...
I was thinking of something like the 990, but it's hard after working with dSLR's...

990 is awesome but i still don't like it compared to my G-series. Of course I'll take my DSLR anyday, but the 990 offers a good P&S that you can take on a night out clubbing or whatever when you don't want bulk =)

I don't believe the SD880 as available now. Not sure if the S90 is the niche replacement or not. The S90 has just a touch less range -- 105 vs 112

Another obvious answer may be the new S90, if you can find one once they are released.

Marc, did you ever get something?
I've been waiting for the S90 reviews/in-stock to show up, but nothing yet -- and photo opps will be missed soon. Personally I'm looking heavily at the SD990. I shoot mostly family/friends rather than landscapes and its 36-133 range is quite nice.

cmdisme,
No I have not gotten anything yet; I don't want to jump into something until I read some more thoughts/opinions.

LX3 is an excellent choice also. Sold my G10 and bought the LX3 !
