i like the reflection of the sun on the deck. really nice silhouette. a little crowded with the poles that line the deck though.

Very good.
However, I would wish for a foreground less centered.

Like them both first one is more dramatic in my opinion.

I think if u cut off the big black bar on the bottom, the shot would look much better. Also, if the middle pole wasn't tangent to the island in the horizon.

In spite of what I said earlier, the original has a better feel about it than the subsequent one. I feel better about the triangle formed by the two groups of chairs and the sun in the original.

My eyes seem to like traversing that triangle better than the one that occurs in the second version.

I just want to be there. Is there a boat at the lake I can take fishing? Does it have a cooler? I'll bring the brews.

yes there are a few boats, plenty of cooler space so bring on those brews!

anyone think this is too dark? maybe needs some fill flash to pop the deck chairs, too? or, perhaps a GND?

not that it's bad. but, my eye is begging for detail in that wood.

I applaud your restraint in not trying to make this a HDR picture. I think #1 is the better of the two. It reminds me of that old advertisement "It's Michelob time".

My preference is for No 1 which I think is a lovely shot. I agree that a crop off the bottom would give a better balanced picture. I would have preferred it if the sun across the water ran between posts so the viewers eye can move freely into the picture without being stopped by a deck post.
