I am currently in a bit of a dilemma about which lenses to take to Gen Con...
Opportunities to take photos include staged shows, candid, cosplayers, guitar hero comp, etc.
My gear include a 1D3, 40D, 15 Fish, 30, 50, 24-70, 70-200, one 580EX2
The logical preference was to have the 24-70 on the 1D3 with flash, and 70-200 on the 40D. But then it seems every event photographer uses the same set-up... I want to be different!!

OK. I give up.
I thought that Gen Con must be some strange American-ism.
But now I see you're in Brisbane...so...
...what's a Gen Con?

OK.
In that case, I'd leave the lot at home and go and enjoy myself.

At the most recent Gen Con, didn't want to mess with equipment. Traveled light and used a Nikon P80.

At previous fandom events, used a XTi, a EF-S 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6 lens and a Sunpak 383 on a Stroboframe Quick Flip 35 bracket.

The XTi might generate better images, but the P80 takes no thought to use, while the XTi requires constant adjustments.
A better all-around lens selection for the XTi at a fandom event would be an all-in-one zoom such as a Tamron 18-200mm.

Coulda gone into the infamous "green-box" mode with the xti and it should be as "simple" to use as the p80.
