Hi guys,

Noob here. I recently bought a used 40D and I was wondering what you think would be the more useful lens for car photography. I plan on doing indoor/outdoor car shoots, some focusing mainly on the car itself, as well as incorporating scenic backdrops.

*If this matters: I also plan on using whichever lens I get as a walk-around and taking photos of architecture as well as my vacation lens.*

I've whittled down my choices to the 17-55 is usm 2.8 and the 24-105 4L. Is the 24-105 wide enough for close-up shots?

I believe the 17-55 would be better suited for you, on a crop body.

Myself I have used the 24-105 on a crop and it's a nice lens when paired with a 10-22 UWA.

The lens works well for this application, but any competent wide-to-normal or wide-to-short telephoto lens can handle the job. Framing and lighting mean more than glass. You can buy on price and not worry, and the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a good product for the money.
