Challenge #241 – Photo Journalism
For this competition, I would like to see photos that tell a story without saying a single word. Show me the human element of an event or place at your local community. Something that shows emotion and suggests a story without words. It does not have to be people. So think of yourself as a photo journalist and tell me your story without saying one word.

RESULTS
A huge THANK YOU to all who entered Challenge #241 – Photo Journalism making this a successful challenge.
With so many spectacular entries covering such a broad range of topics, it was really difficult to choose 3.
The Top Three:
1). BottomBracket – See No Evil, My Child
This really gave the sense of a parent protecting her child from the evils of the world and really hit home with me. Definitely no need for words here.
The contrast of the black building and sidewalk with the white billboard really helped make this photo spectacular.
2). Teekay – Waterfront Fall
Another spectacular photo that conveys the situation without needing words. The use of B&W added to the feeling of this life or death situation.
3). Michael Wells – Happy Couples
This photo really gave a sense of warmth and friendship with everyone smiling, conversing, and seeming to be enjoying themselves. It’s clear what the event was.
CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!
Wheew, glad the judging is over! The pressure was really on.

Congratulations to BottomBracket - one of several stunning entries this week that could have made the top spot IMHO. And thanks for the unexpected second place - the shot was technically not great and I thought Gewb's "Roving Road Reporter" would top it for that type of gritty subject.
rpolitsr's fire scene was another of my favourites, and Marie's depression entry could have been taken right out of a book of photography's great classics. Shot after the favourite had just lost an an Irish horse race, I presume?
Glad I wasn't the judge this week...;)

Congrats Bottombracket, and Teekay! Thanks, Scooter, for a really unexpected placing. Congrats to all of you, there were some very powerful images this week, in keeping with the given subject. To list my favorites would basically restate the entire list, so I'll just say I loved them all!

Congratulations BottomBracket, teekay and Michael Wells.
Interesting theme, Scooter49; thanks for hosting and judging.
The three winners are on my list of favorites of these challenges, so I’m glad with the results. As teekay, I enjoyed the picture of gewb too because it tells the tale and captures other reporters in the scene.
marie, your photo is great! The people captured by your camera usually seem (or are) great characters.
Thanks teekay for your comment. My picture was shot seven days ago, on Sunday, as close as 120m (300 feet) from my home’s door. The sun of a clear day behind the smog cloud enhanced the glow nicely.
I considered other shots, one with the TV reporters on the scene and another with the firefighters at work too, (as gewb) but finally picked the orange smog cloud.

Wow thanks for the win and for hosting a well run challenge Susan! There were many great entries and I must say that any of a number of them could easily take the top spot. Congratulations on being in the winner's circle Teekay and Michael, I am in good company. Thanks for those who entered, I really enjoyed looking at the photos. It goes to show that G series cameras can quite hold their own in terms of image quality, and since they are quite easy to carry around, they are great tools for PJ.
I will be back with a new challenge soon!

I'm not willing to chase ambulances, fire trucks and police cars for the snap shot. Honestly, until this challenge popped up, I never ever considered the idea. Isn't there a law against doing that? Besides, I can just see it now...me tailgating a firetruck, running behind the firemen begging them to slow down as I try to set up my camera, follow them into someone's kitchen, only to capture the shot of them putting out a toaster fire. (You know this is all tongue-in-cheek.)
Terrific entries this week and I enjoyed seeing briefly two shots involving cycling. I did enough of that myself this past weekend, I didn't have the wherewithal to push a shutter button nor mouse afterwards.
I'll get my batteries charged for this week's challenge.

Hello Everyone,
This really was a difficult challenge to judge as there were so many entries that were just amazing shots. You guys sure were tough on this first time judge! My challenge was to close the contest at 07:00AM on a Monday morning as that's not a time that I can be on the computer. I'd like to pass along a SPECIAL THANKS TO CAR for so gratiously answering my call for help in posting the closing. As it turned out my son also came to my rescue with his laptop and amist crying babies, and the end of his 12 hours on-duty shift, we did manage to get it closed. So my question is how should situations like that be handled...what are the rules? As a challenge participant, I want to follow all the rules and that includes the responsibilities associated with winning. Thanks for your thoughts!

You don't have to announce the closure time. It is already in the rules when you play the game. Everyone who posts after the deadline would automatically be disqualified.
It's just that simple :)

They try it twice, I get their camera. That seems a reasonable extension to the rule.

I wondered where you were last week. My shot was taken Labor Day weekend at the Midwest Tandem Rally, this year at Rochester MN. We had about 350 teams this year, down from the normal 4-500, but had two of the nicest days of weather this part of the country can offer. I should have had more photos, but was busy riding!:D

Generally speaking, there's no law (in democratic Western countries, anyway) against taking photos of almost anything that happens in public view on public property. Of course, there are many exceptions where good taste and commonsense would dictate that a photographer at least be discreet about it, although that doesn't stop some aggressive pros in the pursuit of ever more dramatic or even gruesome shots demanded by some editors.
I once used to do photojournalism work for a small town daily newspaper and in fact when you look at your surroundings with that eye it's not hard to take a newsworthy photo almost every day on a walk through town.
In the case of my entry this week I was on vacation, hiking through a park, came upon the scene, and my old instincts took over. I immediately thought it would be a great shot for the local paper, taking care that the victim's face was not identifiable. Turned out they didn't pay for freelance shots so it went unpublished until this challenge.
Here's another of the same incident, which took place where it was easier to evacuate by Coastguard boat than to haul him back up the cliff.

This is true teekay.. I worked for a newspaper, a medium sized daily, for 17 years.. The general rule of thumb was get any pictures you can but keep out of the way of the emergency services guys..We stuck to that rule and had a wonderful relationship with police, fire, ambulance etc.. One word comes to mind "professionalism"..

My hubby testing out a mattress with a complete stranger at a home show :)
didn't recognize Skip Maureen lol
last time he was shown here ( in a bed) he had had a bypass
looks like that lady has shared the bed with a fully recovered Skip
safe in the knowledge that her bag was well protected ..
?
he should have covered up those lovely legs
could be a case of 'snow on the roof but fire in the cellar' ?
