This never happened before.....went to turn the camera on after charging the battery and it didn't want to power on. Finally after opening and closing and sliding the switch it turned on really slowly and then displayed CF card error. I pulled the card and the battery a few times but each time the same thing happens. Is this a card error, a baterry error, or a camera (software/ electronics) error? thanks in advance.

It happened to me one time, the camera acted up. Besides the CF error I got the e18 - lens error (lens won't retract). I finally replaced the CF card with a spare and everything was normal. BTW, I also have a S45.
I assumed the CF had a short in its circuitry, which I guess was caused by my card reader. Cause whenever, I use my card reader, the cards I use CF/MMC gets really hot.
Hope this helps.

check for bent/broken pins in the CF slot.

Bought a new CF card today and all is well again! Anyone know why this happened? I am traveling to Europe next month...I don't want to get stuck without a camera.

I also found that if you try to delete files straight from the CF whilst connecting through the camera to the computer, you often would get this error.
Regarding the camera not turning on when sliding the lid, maybe you were too quick :) It had happened to me before as well but didn't get any lens error or anything....
Cheers,
Ben

The world is not a perfect place. CF cards go bad occasionally for no apparent reason.
Glad to hear it wasn't anything with your camera that caused the prob.
