Storing photos on a network?

I basically need a photo server for people that I work with to be able to access tagged or categorized photos that we take on a daily basis. These folders of photos could be up to 4 GB. External viewing won't be necessary for people outside of the network. I have a web server and I have a file server, but the file server isn't really working because with the exception of folders, there's no other way to categorize the photos. Would a some type of web server script like Menalto Gallery be better?

I would give Gallery2 a serious look. I have two separate installs running on different hosts (hosted by 1and1) and it is very customizable. Pretty easy to install/configure. If your webserver has PHP and MySQL, you should be good to go!

I just went to check out 1and1 and the sites down. Horrible first impression.
