View Full Version : Is a G10 image quality noticeably better than lessor Canons?

I've been looking at the G10 (now watching for G11 samples to show up). I want something cleaner than my old FZ28 (which the G10 is -- better sharpness, less color blotchiness, cleaner skin tones, though actual high ISO noise is close).

I came across a comparison with the G10 and SX110 (pocket superzoom). I downloaded the sample shots. Surprisingly they looked close -- very close -- even viewed on large display side by side. I downloaded the same scene with a SX200 (newer pocket superzoom) and the results were again pretty close (though it seemed to have a touch of corner softness).

All 3 cameras have manual control, longer ranges, larger LCDs, fairly bright lenses (SX110 being the quickest), etc. The G10 shoots RAW and has a hot shoe (both features I doubt I'd use). The G10 also costs far more and can be used as a defense weapon.

So just talking straight IQ how does the G10 compare to the lessor Canons -- AUTO to AUTO?

I think it's safe to say that the G/9 G/10 and soon the G11 are the IQ leaders when comparing Canon P&S cameras. I have owned the G10, SX110, SX10, and the SD 780, the G10 produced the best images of the four...hands down.

Thanks for the reply. I don't want to put too much emphasis on a single test image. DPR has a nice group test by which comparison photos were taken with each camera. IMO that's the best way to show the difference (natural light/same time frame), but it still doesn't compare with hands-on use over time.

If you are going to use a camera in auto what's the point of getting the G10? Yes there is potential for better image from the G10 but if you are going to shoot in auto you most likely will not see it.

So used as a P&S the G10 is no better than a SD-series?

You would be paying for a lot of stuff that you would never use.
