View Full Version : Which CD/DVD printer?

I'm after a small, cheap printer to print labels on CDs and DVDs for customers. I have absolutely no desire to do my own prints at home, though I might occasionally do off one or two prints it would be very rare. My priority is easy and reasonable quality CD/DVD printing, price of purchase and ink, and a small size. Any suggestions? I have no idea at all about printers.

Anyone?

Epson makes printers that are CD printing capable for cheap. I want to say that units with that feature start in the $150 area. Sorry I don't have any model numbers.

Thanks DP, the R210 looks like it'd do a decent job :) Now I just have to see if I can find something even smaller, I really don't need to print anything bigger than a CD, and I don't have much room.

Check out this site. I have one of their CD/DVD Dupicators and have been happy. www.microboards.com I saw they have CD printers listed.

My R200 does CD printing. However, that's as big as a photo printer. Which it does pretty nicely may I say...

Thanks lost, i'm really looking at consumer oriented printers not commercial ones, because printing labels is a "nice to have" right now, not a need.

Thanks for the info on the R200 Kev, that's my current favorite pick :)

the nice thing about the epsons mentioned is that they print directly on the cd. No labels to try and align. And, they're some of the best photo printers available.

Maybe I need to suck it up and just get the Epson, and find somewhere to stash it when i'm not using it. There's not a lot of room around my computer, and I don't think printers would like to be on the floor with all the dust and carpet lint around.

I don't know, but I've had Epson printers before and switched to a Canon i950 and it blew away anything the Epson ever did. I became really tired of the noise the Epson would make through it's cleaning cycle (or whatever it was doing). The Canon i950 was leagues ahead of the Epsons I was using.

Thanks Moses. The Canon i950 costs about 2.5 times more than the Epson R210 here in NZ, and all I want is prints on a CD/DVD - the quality of the print doesn't even need to be that good. I just don't want to hand write on them with a black pen! Is the Canon 2.5 times better than the Epson at printing on CDs?

Have used the Epson R210 for a while now but recently tried the Canon PIXMA 3000, which is similarly priced (about $200 in Aussie). Have got to say that the Canon is a lot quiter and easier to use. In both cases the disks look far better than the old hand labelled ones.

If you could live with monochrome direct print on CDs Casio makes a small one:

I don't mean to overdo this, but this is big news! It's become easy to add the CD/DVD direct print feature makes them even better, in my opinion.

You now have a choice other than Epson for a consumer-priced printer for CD/DVD’s. The problem of needing a CD/DVD tray for Canon printers in the U.S. is solved. Look in on http://cd-trays.com. The website has links for label software, including Canon's free CD-LabelPrint application.

If you are not already aware, many models of Canon printers are designed to print directly on printable discs, but that feature is omitted in the U.S. Slightly oversimplified, adding a tray to a U.S. printer and reinstalling the printer driver makes the U.S. version become just like its European counterpart with the same model number.

As one who strongly prefers Canon over Epson, this was like finding treasure.

This thread is more than a year old. I got a Canon ip5000, which here in NZ has a CD tray included.

You're right on both counts. It's a very old problem in the Americas. Canon doesn't sell the trays here so I thought new aftermarket source a worthy update.
