One shot or AI servo?

Been shooting my brothers middle school team, and i've been shooting AI SERVO, but have been having a couple missed focuses from not being able to follow the ball as quickly as i should.



would it be more beneficial to shoot one shot or keep trying to pan?


what do you guys shoot settings wise for football?

also, do you guys move up and down the sidelines as the game goes, or just wait in one spot?

What camera body are you using?

What lens? aperture?

Which focus point setting?

I recommend Av mode, wide open aperture, AI Servo, center point focus, rear-button AF-ON/* focus. Adjust ISO to keep SS between 1/500"-1/1000"... if SS drops below 1/500", bump up ISO. If SS gets above 1/1000", bump ISO down a stop.

For youth football, I stay with the ball... maybe 0-10 yards ahead of the line of scrimmage.

Get low... kneel or sit on the turf, especially for youth football. IMHO, portrait orientation (vertical) works much better than landscape orientation (horizontal). Shoot tight. Crop tighter.

I'm wondering if you can rent a 70-200 2.8 IS or a 300mm. The 70-300 is f4-5.6. That is going make it harder to get you the light you need to get very sharp images. I don't have that lens, I bought the 70-200 f4, then the 2.8 IS and now also added the 100-400. I use these for my sons' soccer games. I always shoot manual, AI Servo and 1/1000 or faster for speed, center focus, evaluative metering (I think). I adjust as I go. I really prefer the 2.8 IS as it is fast and so sharp.
